RedHawks drop Lancers in overtime, 59-55

LAKEVILLE - The first-ever meeting between the boys basketball teams from LaVille and Goshen needed extra time to be decided.

Unfortunately for the Lancers, the visiting RedHawks saved their best shooting for the fourth quarter and overtime session to come away with the 59-55 win at Dale E. Cox Gymnasium Saturday afternoon.

“It could have easily gone either way,” said LaVille head coach Michael Edison. “The game came down to a couple of key plays that if it swings one way or the other, it’s a totally different outcome.”

Goshen came in with a modest 2-4 record, but the wins were its last two outings. The losses were to Class 3A ranked teams Mishawaka Marian (No. 7) and South Bend Saint Joseph (No. 10), another Class 3A school in West Noble - by just one point - and to Class 4A Elkhart.

For three quarters it appeared its next loss would be to the Lancers, who led after each of the first three frames and by as much as seven midway through the third period. With 4:51 in regulation, the lead was still six, 44-38, after an Andrew Dill fastbreak layup before the RedHawks hit back-to-back 3s and added a lay-in from freshman Gage Worthman as part of an 8-2 run to pull even at 42 and less than two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.

Ayden Doyle’s driving layup, two of his six fourth-quarter points, gave LV the lead with 1:25 showing, but Goshen answered with two foul shots to tie it again at 48 at the 1:07 mark. After a LaVille turnover, the RedHawks used two timeouts to set up a potentially game-winning shot, but Doyle took a charge with 2.5 seconds left in regulation. The Lancers then advanced the ball and quickly called time with 1.9 showing, but a set play after a timeout did not result in a shot attempt and the game headed to the extra session.

LaVille’s Leyton Czarnecki scored on a drive to open the overtime, but Worthman nailed another trey and Goshen hit 3-of-4 free throws while LV misfired on four straight three-pointers over the next three minutes. Czarnecki ended the LV scoring drought with an inside bucket to close within 54-52 and just over a minute on the clock, but Worthman then hit his second 3 in OT to effectively end the Lancers’ comeback bid.

Worthman hit four of the team’s six 3s, three coming in the last eight minutes of game time as part of his 17-point effort. Junior guard Drew Hogan led the RedHawks in scoring with 19, followed by sophomore Deecon Hill with 18.

Dill (three 3s) led the Lancers in scoring with 16, followed by Czarnecki with 15 and Bobby Good’s (three 3s) 13. All of Doyle’s eight points came in the fourth quarter and OT.

Goshen was 9-of-10 from the charity stripe, while LaVille was just 4-for-14.
