As Hoosiers are plagued with high inflation, local food pantries are requesting help to feed those in need during Hunger Action Month.
Several shelves are empty at the Marshall County Neighborhood Center. Director Christine “Chris” Garner said, “We need food!”
Maria Schmit of the Bread of Life Community Food Pantry, along with her daughter Annika Polinski and her husband Andy held an outreach at the Plymouth Farmer’s Market Saturday. Representatives from Bread of Life will be on-site every Saturday through September to engage with the community and collect donations.
The Plymouth Chamber of Commerce has partnered with Bread of Life Community Food Pantry to collect donations in a bin in their office in downtown Plymouth.
According to Marshall County United Way (marshallcountyunitedway.org.), 26% of Marshall County households are Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed (ALICE) with an additional 12% living in Federal Poverty. That is a total of 38% of Marshall County living paycheck to paycheck or less.
With some families having to choose which bills to pay between healthcare, utilities and rent / mortgage - local pantries are trying to ease that burden by eliminating hunger from among those painful options.
Individuals are welcome to donate non-perishable food items to the Bread of Life Community Food Pantry located at 6770 N Michigan St., Plymouth Monday between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m., Wednesday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., and Friday between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
Individuals are welcome to donate non-perishable food items to the Marshall County Neighborhood Center located at 402 W. Garro St., Plymouth Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. or Friday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. (noon).
Monetary donations are also appreciated and can be mailed to either organization.
