Plymouth Parks approves no smoking policy

Annette Haining, St. Joseph Health System Tobacco Education Coordinator, requested that signage be placed around the parks. At this month’s meeting, Park Superintendent Mike Hite informed the board that “a few signs” were already in place at baseball diamonds while some had “disappeared” and would need replacing.

Hite told the board that it was the department’s policy that “all the diamonds have no smoking, will have no smoking signs and all the playgrounds will have no smoking signs.”

Haining told Hite and the board that her department would be willing to help pay for those signs using grant funds.

“Again, that’s going to be difficult to enforce,” Board President Dave Morrow said. “And we’re not going to demand that the employees do that, but if it discourages people I think that’s a good thing.”

Haining said that she would need a quote on how much the signs would cost and what the board would like the signs to say. It was the consensus that the signs would say no smoking and no e-cigarettes.

When asked about the quantity of signs, Hite said that 50 may be enough. Signage would be placed at all parks town-wide as well as the city pool.

The board approved the no smoking policy unanimously.
