NAPPANEE – Two children are dead after police say they were ran over by a tractor-trailer rig Tuesday afternoon near Nappanee.
Kosciusko County sheriff’s Sgt. Chris Francis, department spokesperson, said the children – ages 3 and 5 – were underneath the rig’s trailer when the driver, identified as Benjamin T. Sheets, 26, pulled forward, killing them.
The Kosciusko County Coroner’s Office pronounced the children dead at the scene. Their names have not been released.
The incident happened at about 1:45 p.m., Francis said in a news release.
The children were killed at a farm 300 feet north of C.R. 1350 North, directly east of 5370 W. 1350 N.
Francis said Sheets was driving a 1992 International semi-tractor with an attached grain trailer.
Along with the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department and coroner’s office, Nappanee police, Milford police, the Nappanee Fire Department and EMS and Lutheran EMS responded to the scene.
South Bend television station WSBT reported that the children were playing when they were struck by the truck bringing in the field’s harvest.
“A family member of the man driving the truck told us they were bringing in the harvest when he started driving down a lane and hit the two children,” WSBT reported Tuesday afternoon. “He called his father, who was driving the combine, and told him what happened.”
Family members told the television station the children lived at a neighboring home.
Francis said the coroner’s office could release more information on Wednesday.
