School earns more than $5K in books through book fair

Students at Bremen Elementary-Middle School will be reading plenty of new books this fall, thanks to the highly successful Scholastic Book Fair.
The school earned more than $5,000 in books based on a sales total of $9,514.78 from the event, held Oct. 3 through Oct. 7.
Principal Larry Yelaska pointed out that purchasing from the book fair is a win-win.
“When parents buy a book at the book fair, not only do they get their own child a book and get their own child interested in reading, but they also help build classroom libraries and earn books for all the students of our school,” Yelaska said.
Through the proceeds of this year’s book fair, new titles were purchased for the K-8 media center and the guided reading library. Many books were given to classroom libraries as well; K-5 teachers received approximately $40 in books while middle school language arts teachers received around $70 in books. This year, each first-year teacher received an extra $100 in books.
First-year teacher Samantha Holmes, was grateful for the donation to her first grade classroom.
“The book fair donation was greatly appreciated by my entire classroom,” Holmes said. “I received mentor texts that teach specific strategies and skills as well as books I can use to fill my classroom library. I absolutely love teaching with literature! Many of my curricular and social skill lessons are introduced through books I read to my students. My class was ecstatic to look through and read the new books. It was wonderful to see students be so enthusiastic about reading and treating their new books with respect and care. Again, a big thank you from Miss Holmes’ class!”
A group of community volunteers donated their time and talents to make the book fair a success.  Many of the volunteers are retired educators. They included:  Emilie Huffman, Mary Kay Jones, Barb Stillson, Judy Boruff, Barb Sauter, Karen Drake, Judy Rowe, Laura Anderson, Sandy Martin, Cathy Huffman, Charlene Beery, Cathy Hemminger, Wilma Lavine, Joanie Gunterman, Linda Arch, Carol Somsel, Deb Harrison, Sue Hickman and Charlene Muncy.
