Plymouth sweeps Bremen at annual Smash Cancer event

Staff Writer

The Lady Pilgrims earned the sweep, beating host Bremen on all five courts in a special Smash Cancer match at DeSantis Courts Thursday.
Although Plymouth collected all five match points in Thursday's meet, the competition was much tighter than the final score indicated.
Two of the matches went to three sets as Emily Gadziola and McKenzie Scheetz combined to trump Shaelyn Atkins and Kylie Phillips 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 in 2 doubles play, and Plymouth 2 singles player Lanae Singleton rallied to hand Annie Strehler a 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 loss.
In another nip-tuck match at 1 doubles, Libbie Portteus paired up with Kendall Dreibelbis — filling in for Haley Harrell, who was absent from the lineup attending the Brady Sports Achievement Awards as a Eugene Cato Memorial Scholarship recipient Thursday night — and the duo edged Jacyln Lawmaster and Gabby Buck in an ultra competitive two-setter that went 25 games, 7-6(7-4), 7-5.
Also at the meet, Erin Hunter beat Alexa Harshbarger 6-3, 6-4 in 1 singles play, and Jess Stillson handed Liz Lawmaster a 2 singles loss in two 6-2 sets.
While the Pilgrims got the win, both teams could feel good about being a part of the annual Smash Cancer event, which was in its third year for the Bremen and Plymouth girls programs. Players from both teams wore different colored shirts representing different types of cancer with the goal of raising awareness as well as to honor those who have faced cancer. Prior to the meet, players also sold event t-shirts, and all money raised will be donated to the Cancer Association of Marshall County.
