Plymouth competes at CC NLCs

ELKHART — Tired runners don’t make for good conference cross country results.
After four meets in the space of eight days culminating with Saturday’s Northern Lakes Conference championships at Ox Bow Park, Plymouth coach Jami Holm can tell her team needs a break.
“I told them after the meet, I’m looking forward to the 10 days we’ve got with them before the sectionals, more so for resting than training,” said Holm following Saturday’s NLC tournament. “I want them to rest, they need the rest.”
Plymouth’s girls finished sixth in the 5,000-meter NLC race, scoring 136 points. Considering the Pilgrims tied for fourth in the round-robin portion of the league schedule, it was a considerable letdown.
Plymouth’s boys, meanwhile, finished seventh with 219 points.
In the final combination of dual-meet standings with tournament points, Plymouth thus finishes sixth among girls, and ties for seventh among boys.
“Considering where we were coming into this, we’re not very happy at all,” said Holm as the girls results were announced. “We have to regroup for the sectional (at Culver on Oct. 9).
To nobody’s surprise, Northridge cleaned up the girls league title, placing four runners among the top seven finishers and scoring 35 points to turn back Warsaw (56) and Elkhart Memorial (76).
Warsaw senior Ashley Erba, who became the fastest girl cross country runner in Indiana history when she clocked 17:13.7 at the Culver Academies Invitational a week earlier, added another conference title to her belt and set a new course record of 17:17.14. Her teammate, Sarah Ray, finished second in 18:59.46.
Plymouth was led by Megan Fisher, who clocked a personal best 20:07.21 for 12th place.
“Megan ran a great race today, just what you want to see at a conference meet,” said Holm. “And our No. 2 runner (Abby Patrick, 22nd in 20:41.2) was close to a PR, so you can’t ask a lot more. But we definitely could have done better as a team.”
Libby Read was 27th, Shelby Harrell 37th and Brooke Wagner 38th to close out the Pilgrim scoring.
Warsaw went 1-2-3 to control the boys race, with junior Ellis Coon clocking 15:56.75 for an upset victory over front-running teammate Jacob Poyner, who finished third.
Even with those race leaders, though, the Warsaw boys only held off Northridge by seven points, 29-36. After the Tiger trio finished, the next three into the finish chute were all Northridge.
Mason Reed got Plymouth on the scoreboard with a 34th-pace finish, clocking 18:02.66. Clay Corsbie also broke the 19-minute barrier with an 18:57.17 for 43rd.
Levi Schuller was 45th, Brandon Brashere 48th and Kenny Scott 49th for the Pilgrims.
“The boys did good,” said Holm. “They ran better than we expected, really. Considering how tired everybody was, it was a good effort.”
