Pilgrims earn big road win at Memorial, 10-7

ELKHART — What a difference a day made as Plymouth’s Pilgrims came back from a tough conference loss at home to take a big win on the road over Elkhart Memorial 10-7.
“We battled and got a win; it’s a team we got beat by earlier in the year, and that’s what it’s about,” said Plymouth head coach Ryan Wolfe. “We’d like to win two, but if you can’t we’ll take it.”
And that they did by playing solid baseball, taking advantage of solid pitching over a team that had beaten them at Bill Nixon Field earlier in the year. Starter Joey Dragani — for the third straight start — was rock solid in giving the Pilgrims the chance to win.
“He doesn’t miss left and right,” said Wolfe. “If you are missing left and right that’s mechanical, up and down is release point, and you can work on that. I thought he did a great job. We probably went 50 percent change ups tonight, his change up looks just like his fastball coming out of his hand.”
Dragani’s pace also was a factor.
“(Assistant Coach Ron) Sissel and I were talking about it in the third inning,” said Wolfe. “He gets a sign and he goes. I don’t want kids working super fast where they get out of what they want to do, but getting in a rhythm and a flow that keeps the other guys involved in the game — that’s exactly what we want.”
Huge in the win was the 3-for-4 night by Riley Cartwright that included two doubles and four RBIs.
“He’s on some pitches the last few games,” said Wolfe. “He stayed on some pitches and hit them over the second baseman’s head. When he’s a good player is when he stays on the ball and hits it back up the middle. He had a good two-out hit there and that bunt by Matt Flynn scored us two runs. The way were going anything we get is big.”
Plymouth (6-7 and 3-5 in the NLC) plays at Concord on Friday. Memorial moves to 3-13 and 2-6 in conference play.
