PHS gymnasts finish strong

PERU — The Plymouth High School gymnastics team wrapped up its season Thursday night at Peru in a four-way meet also featuring Marion and top 10-ranked Logansport.
Logan topped all three of the other teams by posting a 107.1, and Plymouth defeated Peru and Marion 100.5-79 and 100-86.5, respectively.
The Pilgrims were led by their state-ranked duo of sophomore Cassi Quissell and junior Nicky Davis.
Quissell placed third in every event except bars, where she captured a second behind the No. 7-ranked bars gymnast in the state, freshman Kelly Platt of Logansport.
Davis placed third on vault, tying Quissell with a 9.1. She also took fourth on bars and fourth in the all-around competition. Senior Traci Longanecker also placed for Plymouth, taking fourth on floor and fifth all-around.
With the meet held at the local YMCA instead of the high school, there were equipment issues to contend with, but Plymouth gymnastics coach Dr. Tony McPherron was pleased with his team’s performance on the heels of a season-high team score of 100.675 posted in a win over NLC foe Wawasee Tuesday.
“It was a tough meet tonight due to the conditions. Their bars didn’t go regulation height,” said McPherron. “We pulled skills out of floor and bars due to the equipment issues, but so did Logan. They are incredibly good, and it’s their freshman. Scary. “
“Despite that we managed to post our second highest score of the season tonight. That comes on the heels of our season-high on Tuesday. I was worried because the week before I thought was probably our worst week of the season both practice-wise and meet-wise. We still won last week but did not look good at Warsaw.”
The Pilgrims defeated the Tigers two weeks ago 97.2-96.5, a team they had beaten by double digits twice already this season. They also placed third out of six that week at the Logansport Invitational with a 97.7.
“I guess they got the message after that as we have had two good meets in a row for us this week,” said McPherron. “I really think sectionals are up for grabs this year. Angola is the favorite but if they struggle then it is a four or five team race for the top spot and the top three to move on to regionals. We have some skills to polish up and get down a bit better. If we do we will be right there.”
Plymouth finished the regular season with a 7-2 record in dual meets with both losses coming to teams ranked in the top 10 — LaPorte and Logansport — at one point this season. The Pilgrims also won the Elkhart Invitational and placed no lower than fourth at any of their other four invitationals.
Plymouth with travel to Wawasee on March 2 for the 15 team sectionals. Meet time is set for 11 am EST.
