PLYMOUTH — Mary Ann Norris, 73, of Plymouth, passed away Thursday, Feb. 21, 2013, at the Gulf Coast Medical Center in Fort Myers, Fla.
Mary Ann was a friend to many, throughout Indiana, having lived in southern Indiana, Mishawaka, Indianapolis/Fishers, then returning to her roots in Marshall County in 2000. Her bright smile, sense of humor, and wit, will be missed by all who knew her.
Mary Ann was born in Plymouth, on Sept. 15, 1939. She was the daughter of Welcome and Lois (Ranstead) Norris. She graduated from Tyner High School in 1957 and went on to graduate from the University of Indianapolis (Indiana Central College) and Indiana Vocational Technical College in Indianapolis.
Mary Ann was a woman of vision and happiest at working on a project and being creative. She most enjoyed transforming someone’s trash into a treasure. Her largest project was restoring her 1865 Centennial home. She loved traveling and taking her grandchildren on vacations, as well as antique shopping, music, decorating, her pet schnauzers, and working in her yard.
Ronald W. Pierce and Mary Ann were married July 30, 1962. They were blessed with two children: John William Pierce and Madonna Pierce McGuire. Mary Ann later married Gerald Royce Stump, 1972-1987, with stepchildren, Gary Stump, Vikki Stump Filipietz, and Stephen Stump.
In 1965, Mary Ann started working for Southern Bell Telephone Company (now South Central Bell) in Louisville, Ky., which turned into a career of 27 1/2 years from Louisville, to Indiana Bell in South Bend, then to AT&T in Fort Wayne and Indianapolis. She retired from AT&T, in Indianapolis in 1992, but wanting to explore other interests; she built a home, went back to school, received a degree in interior design, built a cabin, and restored the old Bower home, in Plymouth. She also worked as an account executive for Entertainment Publications for six years. After moving back to Marshall County she worked another six and a half years as a courier for Neighborcare Pharmacy, in South Bend. She loved driving and meeting new people throughout northern Indiana and southern Michigan.
Mary Ann was always involved in her community. In Mishawaka she was a Cub Scout Den Mother and manager for the first girls softball team. She was also a Telephone Pioneer. In Fishers, she served six years as secretary for the board of directors of her neighborhood association. Interested in preserving history and heritage, she volunteered at the Marshall County Museum and served on the board of directors for the Marshall County Historical Society and Marshall County Wythougan Valley Preservation Council.
Mary Ann was a member of the Tyner United Methodist Church. She always felt Tyner was “Home” and that the people of Tyner were extended family, even though she lived in other areas of the state for 42 years. She was glad to be “Home” near family once again.
Mary Ann is survived by her son, John William “Billy” (Peggy Bradley) Pierce of Osceola and grandchildren, Brittany Pierce (Daniel) Stackowicz of Fishers and Taylor Pierce of Osceola; her daughter, Madonna (Jason) McGuire of Cape Coral, Fla. and grandchildren, Jennifer (Jeremy) Carlisle and Jarrett McGuire; her stepgrandsons, Zachery McGuire and Dakota McGuire; along with three great-grandchildren, Kendall Carlisle, Owen Carlisle, and Ella Stackowicz; her stepchildren, Gary Stump, Vikki Stump Filipietz, and Stephen Stump.
