A couple of rumbles in the clouds caused a 40-minute delay to the inevitable ending of the Class 2A softball regional at Pfeiffer Field. What was even louder though, was the offensive explosion by the No. 1 ranked Bremen Lady Lions’ bats, leading to a dominating 18-2 victory over the South Adams Starfires.
“This was a game we needed to get our mojo back,” said Bremen head coach Mike Huppert. “This is back to Bremen softball right here. When we are on, all nine can hit. When we bring somebody else in, they can hit. It’s confidence.”
There were multiple offensive highlights during the torrential run-scoring. All nine spots in the order crossed the plate at least once as Bremen rang up all of its runs in the first three innings, but Erin Coffel’s day at the dish certainly stood out.
The sophomore shortstop hit her 18th and 19th home runs of the season (5 RBIs), including a no-doubt grand slam for the final four runs of the day. The Starfires came in ranked No. 11 and won the regional a year ago.
“Our bats were on fire,” Coffel said. “This is what we’ve been working for since November. With their pitcher, we knew she was going to pitch outside so we scooted up. We call it ‘chalk talk’. We adjusted, kept our weight back and hit our pitch.
“(On the first HR) I was looking for something to drive, had a 3-1 count and that’s what I got. The second one (also on a 3-1 count but with the bases loaded) the pitch was a little higher.”
But with the same result.
“Their pitcher was around the plate enough for us to make good contact,” added Huppert. “Her pitching didn’t scare us, didn’t mix us up much. With the large crowd, I was hoping (Erin) would show people exactly what she is able to do. She lived up to the hype. I gave her the green light every time. There’s no reason not to. But it is team, team, team. (Pitcher) Kaelyn (Shively) was great. Our defense was fantastic overall. I’m just so proud of them. They’ve earned it all. They’ve been working hard for this.”
Rylee Hershberger (2B, 3B), Caitlin Traxler, and McKenna Myers joined Coffel with two hits apiece. Bailey Fritter and Caitlyn Myers each knocked in two runs. Coffel scored four times, Hershberger thrice, with Traxler, Destaney Achterberg (running for Shively), and McKenna Myers scoring twice each.
The win is Bremen’s fourth regional title overall, the last one coming in ’15. The Lady Lions will now play the morning game at the LaVille Semistate Saturday against the winner of the #16 Boone Grove/Andrean contest. The game is slated for an 11 a.m. start at Newton Park. A win puts them into the 7 p.m. championship at the same location.
