PLYMOUTH — Gladys M. (Mrs. Herschell J.) Umbaugh, 94, of Plymouth, passed away at 5:10 p.m. Monday in the Miller’s Merry Manor, Plymouth.
She was born in Missauki County, Mich. on Feb. 2, 1919 to Julia D. (Firestone) and Horace E. Bailey. She was a resident of the Argos and Plymouth area most of her life and graduated from Argos High School with the Class of 1937.
On July 17, 1937 in South Bend, Gladys married Herschell J. Umbaugh. The couple was blessed with two sons, Roger Lee (Carol) Umbaugh and J. Michael Umbaugh and Pamela Carlberg all of Plymouth. Also surviving are her grandchildren, Susan (Steve) Wilson of Carmel and Jeffery (Jennifer) Umbaugh of Plymouth. Her great-grandchildren are; Kamara Umbaugh, Mackenzie Umbaugh, Kyle Umbaugh, Shad Wilson, Ryan Wilson and Rebecca Wilson.
She loved being a wife, mother, grandmother and considered herself to have had a great life. They traveled extensively and spent many winters in the Ft. Myers, Fla. area. Gladys enjoyed viewing and reading about works of fine art.
After a long and happy marriage of almost 52 years, Herschell preceded in death March 10, 1989. She was also preceded by brothers; Harold and Lloyd Bailey, sisters; Catharine Burbridge, Ruth Brockway, Dorothy Redlin, Frances Jean Cross and Audrey May Perryman as well as a foster brother Raymond Hardy.
She and Herschell were founding members of the Plymouth Calvary Lutheran Church where Gladys was active with the Lutheran Braille group, printing books of the Bible (in braille) for world distribution for more than 20 years. In the community, she served as a Red Cross Nurse’s Aide at Holy Cross Hospital in LaPorte and as a Chaplain Aide at St. Joseph Hospital in Plymouth. Gladys was involved in Tri Kappa Sorority both the active and associate chapters and had served as a president of the Beta Delta Chapter.
She shared her fondness for butterflies with the pre-school students at Calvary Lutheran, providing them miracle of life butterfly kits for more than 15 years.
Visitation will be held Thursday, Feb. 14 from 4 - 8 p.m. in the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in the Calvary Lutheran Church, 1314 N. Michigan St., Plymouth where visitation will resume after 10 a.m. until time of service. Pastor Steven Resner and Vicar Andrew Gerike will preside.
