Falcons run over LaVille for 50-7 win

LAKEVILLE – If you blinked during the first half Friday night, you probably missed a John Glenn score or two.
The visiting Falcons, who crossed the goal line in each of their seven first-half possessions, fired off 50 points before the break — highlighted by four touchdowns from superstar senior running back Josh Anderson – en route to a 50-7 Northern State Conference football win over LaVille at Lancer Field.
“This game is always a really tough match-up,” Glenn head coach Justin Bogunia said. “LaVille’s one of our neighboring schools, and our kids know each other. I’ve had years where we’ve needed to make one big play to get out of here with a win. Their kids always play us tough. We talked about taking care of business and setting the tempo, and we did that tonight. I’m pleased.”
In just one half of play, the versatile Anderson produced touchdown scampers of 30 and 36 yards, returned a kickoff following a safety for a 70-yard touchdown, and snared a 13-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Tom Knape. Anderson, often with Lancers in tow, legged out 153 yards in 11 totes.
“Anderson is a great running back, and he will make you miss,” LaVille head coach Mark Reddy said. “All week we talked about tackling low, because if we tackled high we weren’t going to have success. We kept tackling high and we didn’t have success.
“Probably the most disappointing thing about tonight was our lack of discipline,” he continued. “At times we failed before the ball was ever snapped; we lined up wrong a couple of times and had people out of position.”
Knape made the most of his two official tosses with a 64-yard heave down the left sideline to Jonathan Stewart for a 21-0 Glenn lead at the end of the first quarter to go along with his hook-up with Anderson. Knape also completed a two-point conversion toss to Anthony Eldridge.
Derek Hiler followed up the Falcons’ initial score – Anderson’s 30-yarder – with an 11-yard run to put Glenn on top 13-0 with 3:31 left in the first frame. Meanwhile, fullback Trevor Duff finished with 71 rushing yards capped off by a 45-yard scoring scamper right before halftime.
“Everybody contributed,” Bogunia said. “Tom completed all of his passes. Trevor ran the ball well at fullback. Josh had another good night; he scored two rushing touchdowns, a special teams touchdown, and a receiving touchdown. We’re focused on getting other guys to contribute, and they did tonight.
“Hiler’s done a nice job, especially the last two or three weeks,” he added. “Duff started the season at wing back, and he’s moved to fullback. Hiler’s stepped in and has really come along as our second back. He’s finalized our backfield. We’re happy about that progression.”
Defensively, the Falcons’ first string limited LaVille to minus 2 yards rushing in the first half.
“Our defense played well,” Bogunia said. “We had (LaVille) for negative 2 yards rushing in the first half, and that’s great for our defense. The last two weeks we’ve gotten to play our JV and freshmen kids the entire second half. That’s very important in terms of our program development.”
The Lancers erased the goose egg with a 1-yard Josh Dudeck plunge, set up by Levi Lucas’ 69-yard sprint that ended just short of the end zone, with 3:23 left in the game.
“In the second half we did a couple of nice things that allowed us to score,” Reddy said. “Some of that probably had to do with who was in the game, but right now our biggest concern is us. We’re not concerned about who’s lined up across the ball.”
Glenn travels to Triton next week, while the Lancers host Knox.
