Council to start interviewing: Candidates to replace director of operations narrowed to six

BREMEN — The Bremen Town Council was expected to begin interviewing candidates earlier this week for a new town director of operations.
The number of applications have been narrowed to six candidates, said Rick Graverson, council president, at the council’s Feb. 25 meeting.
The first round of interviews was expected to begin Tuesday, March 5.
The council wants to have the opening filled as soon as possible since there will be extensive training needed before the current director, Rich Martin, leaves the position.
Martin will have been a city employee for 35 years when he officially retires on Aug. 30.
Two other important town positions are also in the interviewing stage: fire chief and parks department superintendent.
The four applicants for Fire Chief Jerry Lanning’s position were interviewed Tuesday, Feb. 26, and each had been given letters of support from the Volunteer Firefighter’s Association.
The position for parks department superintendent, held for many years by Larry Kipfer, interviewed five applicants Thursday, Feb. 28.
Kipfer has been parks superintendent for 35 years, while Lanning has served on the fire department for 41 years, including 17 as chief.
The majority of the applicants for all job openings are from Bremen, and those who are not are from nearby areas, Graverson said.
The applicants’ names were not released.
In other news, Police Chief Matthew Hassel requested the council’s permission to block Indiana 106 for the annual Firemen’s Parade on July 2.
He also addressed the council about some minor parking issues near Bremen Public Schools. Because the school is used as a voting facility, it needs to conform to many building regulations, including those from the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Hassel asked the town for permission to set aside a place in front of the school for handicap parking. The motion was approved.
The next council meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday, March 11.
