Bremen, Triton open quests for 3rd straight softball titles

Bremen began its quest for a third straight softball sectional championship with a 9-0 victory over Fremont at the Class 2A Westview Sectional in Topeka Monday.
Chelsea Huppert struck out the first 10 Fremont batters en route to 12 total strikeouts while allowing only three hits versus one walk in the shutout victory.
Micaela Box had three hits and three RBIs. Emily Molden collected a pair of hits and three RBIs. Sabrina Gilley, Sara Knepper, Breann Wilson and Huppert added two hits each.
Bremen will resume play today against Prairie Heights at 5 p.m.

Meanwhile, down the road in Bourbon, Triton began its title defense on its home turf at Keyser Field with a 15-5 victory over Elkhart Christian.
The Trojans scored seven runs in the fifth on RBI singles by Lexee Lemler, Courtney Jennings and Zoee Stephan, an RBI double by Heather Stichter, an error and a two-run double by Lemler.
Taytum Hargrave had two extra-base hits for Triton. She doubled in the third and fourth innings and singled in the first and sixth innings.
Jennings got the win in relief for the Trojans, pitching two innings and allowing no runs.
Elkhart Christian grabbed an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first.
The Trojans pushed across two runs in both the third and the fourth innings.
The hosts added three more runs in the bottom of the sixth. The inning got off to a hot start when Kreft singled, plating Stichter and Stephan.
Triton advances to face Bethany Christian, a 7-6 winner over Argos in the tourney-opener, in the championship today at 6:30 p.m. The Trojans are in search of their third straight title.
