Anthem insurance hacked

Staff Writer

Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield was the target of a very sophisticated external cyber attack earlier this week.
According to a letter sent out to all members:
"These attackers gained unauthorized access to Anthem's IT system and have obtained personal information from our current and former members such as their names, birthdays, medical IDs/ social security numbers, street addresses, email addresses and employment information, including income data. Based on what we know now, there is no evidence that credit card or medical information (such as claims, test results etc) were targeted."
Once the attack was discovered Anthem made immediate effort to close the security vulnerability and contacted the FBI to begin an investigation. In addition Anthem hired a leader in cybersecurity firms, Mandiant, to evaluate the security system. Mandiant will also identify solutions to prevent an incident such as this in the future.
Anthem plans to contact members (and former members) whose information has been accessed.
"We will provide credit monitoring and identity protection services free of charge so that those who have been effected can have peace of mind."
A website has been created specifically for members to access information such as frequent questions and answers ( A toll free number was also dedicated for current and former members to call with any questions related to the incident: 1-877-263-7995.
