Meet the candidates night

September 30, 2014

STARKE Co. — The Starke County Chamber of Commerce is hosting their annual "Meet the Candidate's Night" Wednesday, Oct. 1 at the Nancy J. Dembowski Community Center in Knox. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the event will run from about 6 − 9 p.m.
This is a non-partisan event that gives voters a chance to hear where each candidate stands on the issues that matter to you.
There is no charge to attend.
For those who are unable to attend "Meet the Candidate's Night", The first "Wake up Starke County" forum will be held Friday, Oct. 10 at 5:30 p.m. at Knox High School.

BLPOA soup social and scarecrow contest

BASS LAKE — The Bass Lake Property Owners Association (BLPOA) is hosting their annual soup social and scarecrow contest. People who attend can enjoy "all you can eat homemade soups" and activities for the kids.
The event will be held Saturday, Oct. 11 at the BLPOA building on State Road 10.
The scarecrows will be judged in three categories: Best storybook character, funniest and scariest!

Knox reviews balanced calendar for 2015-2016 school year

Knox Schools Superintendent A.J. Gappa led discussion with members of the Knox School Board on the proposal to change schools to a balanced calendar starting with the 2015-2016 school year. “Public meetings were held last spring,” added Gappa, “and comments were favorable. Rochester’s been on a balanced calendar for six or seven years. Plymouth, Triton and John Glenn have indicated they will change. North Judson-San Pierre and Oregon-Davis also wish to stay on the same schedule as Knox.”

SCEDF sponsors second annual Manufacturer's Day event

STARKE Co. — The Starke County Economic Development Foundation (SCEDF), in partnership with Oregon-Davis School Corporation, North Judson-San Pierre School Corporation, and Knox Community School Corporation, is holding their second annual Manufacturers Day celebration on Thursday, Oct. 2, 2014. During the day, the Foundation will host approximately 360 seventh grade students from all three school corporations at the Knox Middle School.

Information sought in hit and run

September 17, 2014

STARKE COUNTY — Police are looking for the driver of a vehicle who hit and killed a 33-year-old Koontz Lake man in the early morning hours of Tuesday, Sept. 16.
Chris Howard, 33, of Koontz Lake was walking eastbound in the area of 900 E. and U.S. 30, before S.R. 23, when he was struck and killed by a motorist.
Howard was reported missing at 3 p.m. Tuesday afternoon. But no one had seen him since 2 a.m. Tuesday.
Starke County Officer Rob Olejniczak said the area was blanketed with heavy fog at the time Howard was killed. Police believe the driver may be unaware that they hit a person.

Knox teens found safe

September 15, 2014

Kane Howard and Jordan Fletcher, two Knox boys who had been missing since Sunday, were found safely in the Toto area this morning. Starke County Sheriff's Detective Kenny Pfost said the boys were located by two Starke County officers.

Police and family members are searching for two Knox Middle School students, Kane Howard and Jordan Fletcher, both 12.
Nicole Wilcox, the mother of Kane, said the boys were last seen at her residence on 400 S. Wilcox said they were supposed to be getting dressed for church.
Kane was wearing jeans and a black Abercrombie shirt. Wilcox said Jordan was downstairs dressing and she is unsure of what he was wearing.
