Drug & Tobacco Free falls under Starke County commission scrutiny

KNOX — Several officers from the Starke County Tourism Board approached the Starke County Commissioners during their Monday morning meeting to discuss the mishandling of funds that involved two local organizations.
"Debbie Mix, Tabitha Dillner and Rich Wieczorek appeared before the commissioners, at their request, to discuss an ongoing incident regarding Jenny Carter and the mishandling of $7140," Starke County Commission President Kathy Norem said.

Bobby Tauteris is laid to rest

NORTH JUDSON — Family, friends and members of the community packed inside Braman & Bailey Funeral Home in North Judson Sunday, Jan. 15 to celebrate the life of Spc. Robert “Bobby” Tauteris Jr. and to say their final goodbyes.
Bobby lost his life Jan. 6 in Kandahar Afghanistan when the vehicle he was traveling in hit a roadside bomb. Three other soldiers lost their lives in the blast and one was seriously injured.
Bobby grew up in North Judson and was a 1986 graduate of North Judson High School.

WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP — Spc Robert “Bobby” Tauteris received a hero’s welcome at Porter County Airport Saturday morning. Tauteris was killed, along with three other soldiers Friday, Jan. 6 in Kandahar Afghanistan when the vehicle he was in hit a roadside bomb. The group, which was on a dangerous mission to clear the area of explosive devices, was part of an Indiana National Guard unit out of Valparaiso.

Dozens of residents lined the streets to pay respects as the motorcade and hearse passed by on its way to Braman & Bailey Funeral home.

Family shares memories of Bobby Tauteris

PLYMOUTH — Family members of Spc. Robert Tauteris spoke out about the loss of their loved one at a special press conference that was held at the Plymouth American Legion Wednesday.
Tauteris, 44, known as Bobby to family and friends, was killed last week when the vehicle he was traveling in hit a roadside bomb. Three other soldiers perished and one was wounded in the blast: Spc. Brian Leonhardt, of Merrillville, Sgt. Jonathan Metzger of Indianapolis, and Spc. Christopher Patterson, of Aurora, Ill. The soldiers were members of the Indiana National Guard’s 713 Engineer Company, Valparaiso.

PLYMOUTH – Ironically, it was just two months ago that Rick Cooper, Jr. was razzed about his comment to “What I’m Thankful For” in the Pilot News Thanksgiving edition. Naturally sarcastic, Cooper said, “I’m thankful that tax time is less than two months away.” After all, he has a transmission to replace in his out-of-commission car.

Two arrested for Starke County home invasion

KNOX — Jeremy A. Rowe, 33, and Randall L. Rowe, 35, both of Hamlet, were arrested and booked into the Starke County Jail early Friday evening for their alleged involvement in a Starke County home invasion which occurred earlier in the day.
