PLYMOUTH — Plymouth got a boost from juniors Amber Redinger and Andria Shook, and the Lady Pilgrims claimed a Northern Lakes Conference win over visiting Goshen at home on Senior Night Thursday.
“It was really nice to play again in our gym,” said Plymouth Head Volleyball Coach Doug West. “It’s just one of the funnest places ever that I’ve experienced as a coach or a player as far as just the music and just everything about the way we do our home matches is very energizing and so well done. It’s fun to be at home and win here and win a big NLC match and try to keep building momentum for October.”
Redinger and Shook each put away 11 kills with three and two digs, respectively, at the net, and Shook served up triple aces as Plymouth grabbed the early momentum to run away with a 25-14, 25-8, 25-20 win over the Redskins at The Rock.
“We played good volleyball, and it’s neat to see different girls really getting some good opportunities to get kills and make big contributions at the net with their attacking,” said West.
Also for Plymouth, Haley Harrell led in setting with 20 assists, while Marissa German put nine digs to target, and Carly Baker notched five kills.
The Pilgrims seized control of the match momentum with six unanswered points to go up 16-8 in the first game, then jumped out to a 10-2 lead in the second game on their way to the lopsided 25-8 win. They ran out the third game 4-1 to put away Goshen in the minimum number of games.
Plymouth trailed only once at the match, down 0-1 in the second set and was tied with the Redskins briefly at 3-all in the final set.
The team moves above .500 at 13-12 overall with a 2-3 conference mark.
The team honored two senior players in defensive specialist Kelly Hoeffler and attacker Kori Potoczky after the contest.
“Kelly is a great defensive specialist for us. She’s very quick, very athletic. She’s got a nice serve, got a good platform for passing and defense. She’s a spirited player and just does a lot of good things for us; she plays three rotations out of the six in the defensive spot, and she’s one of the reasons that we have a real solid team,” said West. “Kori is a great outside attacker for us. Very athletic, just a fun player to coach. Does a nice job attacking, and she sets our transition when Haley digs the ball out of the right back Kori steps in and does a solid job setting the ball to our hitters so we can get a good, hard swing. And she has a very excellent serve. In fact her serve is one of her key skills.”
“Both of them are neat kids, good athletes,” he continued. “I think they’re having a real good experience their senior year, and we’re hoping to have a big October for our whole team’s sake but of course for their sake as seniors as well.”
Plymouth plays in the South Bend Adams Tournament Saturday. The Pilgrims enter pool play against Adams, Western and Bowman Academy.
