ARGOS — The Argos girls soccer team fell to Class A, No. 5 Mishawaka Marian 3-1 at home Monday night.
The Lady Knights showed the reason for their high ranking, outshooting the hosts 10-3. Maggie Hartnagel gave the visitors a quick start, notching a goal in the sixth minute. Marian’s Gabby Veldman scored twice, once assisted by her sister Denise, to spot the Knights a 3-0 lead with 30 minutes to play in the game.
“We were outplayed more than the score showed,” said Argos Head Girls Soccer Coach Jon Alcorn. “Marian had an off finishing night or we’d really be hurting. Still, the girls kept at it. I’m not sure I’ve had a busier night with my marker board — I subbed a lot to outline what was right and what wasn’t. But we had to seize this chance to learn against the best team we’ve played this year. I thought Karlee (VanDerWeele) had some great stops. We told her she’d have to be aggressive and come out strong and she did that — really denied some plays that would’ve been shots or scores. We continue to struggle with illness and so the back four of Keri Bair, Karalei Kring, Shelby Sanders and Charlie Horn did not get the breaks they could’ve used.”
The hosts denied the shutout after a Marian foul 20 yards out in the 70th minute. Kring took a quick pass from Bair and buried a shot to put Argos on the board.
“The play off the free kick was satisfying because it was one of those things we worked on in practice last week, and it was Karalei’s first goal of the season,” Alcorn said. “She’s made some good attacking runs from the back, and she deserved it.”
Now 8-5, the Dragons return to play Friday night at 7 p.m. with a Northern Indiana Soccer Conference (NISC) showdown with Westview. The Warriors, from Topeka, are 8-1-2, and one of the favorites in the conference.
