PLYMOUTH — Alex Orellana scored a hat trick, and Daniel Smith struck twice for Plymouth in a home win over visiting Whitko Tuesday.
Smith got the Rockies rolling with a goal on an Evan Glaub assist in the first minute, and Orellana scored in the second minute to put Plymouth up early. Orellana struck again in the 13th and 23rd minutes, while Smith scored his second goal in the 26th minute as a total of five different Plymouth players found the net in the win.
“Those guys are both playing up top, so we’re expecting offensive output from them,” said Plymouth head boys soccer coach Josh Martin. “We tried to keep a lot of stuff on the ground tonight, and we tried to play to our feet. We tried to really push numbers into their half so we could find 2 v 1s, 3 v 1s. Obviously, our guys are pretty aggressive in the box, and we crashed lots of numbers in there. We had guys putting rebounds in and second and third shots, and that put a lot of pressure on their net.”
Plymouth outshot Whitko by a lopsided margin of 16-4, and Charlie Brown made three saves in goal for the Rockies.
Plymouth moves to 2-0. The team will travel to Warsaw for its Northern Lakes Conference opener Thursday at 5 p.m.
“We’re 2-0, but both of those games are non-conference games,” said Martin. “Not to take anything from either of those opponents, but we still feel like we’ve got quite a bit of work to do. Games like these are decent confidence builders because we’ve kind of found that we can find the net. We’re not happy we gave up a goal; we feel like we’ve got a pretty stingy defense and can keep teams out of the net. We’ll see what happens against Warsaw.”
