ARGOS — The Argos girls soccer team dropped a 3-1 decision to Kankakee Valley Saturday.
The Kougars got a great start from Hannah Wilder, who scored twice in the first half. Natalie Lotz put a damper on hopes for a Dragon rally with a score just before the half to put the visitors up 3-0.
“We came out very flat and were not at game speed mentally,” said Argos Head Coach Jon Alcorn. “We were tired and coming off an emotional win, so that is a classic recipe for a letdown. At the half, we challenged them to get focused and start competing. We also changed the formation just to throw a different look at them.”
The Dragons didn’t wait long to show they were now ready to play, as Jami Patterson finished a nice through ball just two minutes into the second frame.
“From the whistle, the second half was better,” said Alcorn. “I could hear them talk and they finally looked awake. That quick score gave us a lift, also. Karlee (VanDerWeele) and the defensive unit still had to work some things out, but after giving up three, it was nice to see them get a clean sheet for the second half. These are kids after all, so it was one of those moments that high school sports provide — fold or fight. I liked the heart they showed.”
The Kougars moved to 1-2 while Argos dropped to 2-1 on the season. The Dragons open Northern Indiana Soccer Conference play next Thursday at South Bend Trinity.
