ARGOS — Argos’ scoring ability was a question mark at the start of the season.
If Tuesday’s opener is any indication, question answered.
The Argos girls soccer team opened its season with a 6-0 rout of Elkhart Christian Academy at home Tuesday.
Jami Patterson opened the scoring on an assist from Shelby Sanders at the 10-minute mark, and Stefany Parrish, Katie Williams and Sammie Hopkins each scored unassisted goals to put the host up 4-0 at the half.
“Last year’s squad was a decent possession team that struggled to put goals on the board,” said Argos Coach Jon Alcorn. “This year’s team has shown signs of being able to pick up where we left off in terms of possession, but improving on the offense.”
Patterson notched a hat trick, scoring twice in the second half, including one on an assist from Kayla Prochno. The visting Eagles managed only one shot on the goal to the Dragons’ 20.
“It’s a good sign for us that we finished and attacked better,” said Alcorn. “I thought our passing was OK at times — certainly not mid-season form — but Sammie (Hopkins) seemed more comfortable in the center midfield and Stefany (Parrish) controlled things well, and they both scored nice goals. Carly McCay and Megan Ditmire sat out with injuries and, when they are ready, it will really make for a nice midfield. We’ll have six or seven players who feel comfortable there, and it’ll really raise our level of play.”
Argos will travel to Plymouth for a game Thursday. Start time is scheduled for 6:15 p.m.
