PLYMOUTH — The Lady Pilgrims managed just three hits in their Northern Lakes Conference match-up with Elkhart Memorial, but they made them count.
Plymouth strung those three hits together during a three-run second inning to defeat the visiting Crimson Chargers 3-2 at home Wednesday.
Plymouth pitcher Marissa Sullivan found herself in a jam right away in the first inning as Memorial loaded the bases with one out on a pair of walks and an error. Sullivan worked out of it without allowing a score, getting a strikeout for the second out before right fielder Kailey Whitley made a running catch on a fly ball near the foul line to end the inning.
Morgan O’Neal led off the bottom of the second for Plymouth with a single up the middle and moved up a base when Whitley drew a walk. After a strikeout, Kelsey Hartman moved both runners up with a sacrifice bunt, then Kristy Clemons’ ground ball found its way through the infield to score O’Neal and Whitley. Katie Wojcik followed with a triple to center to score Clemons for the third run of the inning.
Memorial got on the board in the fifth on consecutive one-out triples by Alix Taber and Paula Strausborger, but Sullivan got a couple of ground-outs to leave Strausborger stranded at third. Memorial cut the deficit to one in the following inning with the help of the second Plymouth error of the game. In the seventh, Strausborger singled with one out and stole second, but a ground ball to O’Neal at short on a close play at first got the second out, and Sullivan got the final out on a pop-up in foul territory to first baseman Wojcik.
Sullivan allowed just five hits for the game and struck out eight to earn the win in the circle.
Plymouth plays again at home Friday against Concord.
