ROCHESTER — Culver head wrestling coach Mike Buschman was hoping his heavyweight could find something to hang his hat on at regionals.
How about a championship?
Culver 285er Jeremiah Harvey surprised the field, handing undefeated Plymouth’s tourney favorite and IndianaMat.com No. 2-ranked Damon Howe a quarterfinal upset, then following up with a dramatic double-overtime pinfall win over Penn’s Kade Maggart in the championship at the Rochester Individual Wrestling Regional Saturday.
“Sectionals was a disappointment for me, but I saw it as an opportunity to get better and as I did wrestle each time I did get better,” said a smiling Harvey.
“Jeremiah is the poster child for our whole athletic program,” said Culver head wrestling coach Mike Buschman. “He’s a three-sport athlete. He’s an all-state football player; he’s an all-conference track athlete.
He’s a guy that gets after it in the summer. He does everything we ask, right down to the fact that he was at a basketball game last night working concessions. I think when the money’s on the line, that’s when that shows up: when you’re doing everything right all year.”
Culver had a strong showing at the meet with a pair of regional titles in Harvey and 189-pounder Matt Hurford, as well as a fourth-place finish from 135-pounder Ian Randolph.
Down the way, meanwhile, Culver Military got three wrestlers into the championship round but fell short in all three. Luther Jacobs and Anthony McHugh both sustained pinfall losses at 140 and 119, respectively, while 103-pound freshman Kayla Miracle lost a last-second 1-0 decision to Penn’s Zach Davis, her first of the season.
Besides Howe, Plymouth’s Jacob Segraves will move on to the Merrillville Semistate after finishing fourth in the 215-pound class with a 7-1 loss to Bremen’s Alan Bollenbacher.
“We’ve got some work to do, we’ve got some lessons to learn and we’ve got to be able to get back on it,” said Plymouth head coach Bob Read. “We put a week in and I think we’ll be all right; you just want to advance.”
Bremen saw a trio of wrestlers move on in Bollenbacher and heavyweight Abraham Hall, who lost an 8-0 decision to Howe, while Jose Rodriguez finished third at 125 pounds Saturday.
“He’s really wrestling well,” said Bremen head coach Shawn Campbell of Rodriguez. “He’s just a fiery, explosive type of kid and a battler... He’s got some natural ability about him, and the more he learns the better he’s going to be. He’s kind of wide-eyed and excited right now about the whole thing.”
