PLYMOUTH — The Plymouth Arts Council will enter just its second year of operation with an election of officers on Saturday, but the group has made a significant impact in a very short amount of time.
The group started a year ago as a community discussion of how to encourage the growing group of artists in Marshall County. The Arts Council is now under the umbrella of Encore Performing Arts and therefore has access to resources to accomplish that goal. One initial goal was a listing of artists of any kind — music, painting, sculpture, writers, photographers, theatre, etc. — in Marshall County.
“We hoped that list would be a way for everybody to know what kind of artists there are in Marshall County,” said Jerry Nikitas, outgoing President of the organization. “Say you need a piano player for a wedding, a band or a caricaturist, they would all be listed there with contact information. We also hoped that it would be a way for artists all over the county to network with each other.”
The list of artists is now in website form, and up and running but that isn’t the only thing the group has accomplished in just one year. A very successful art show at the Blueberry Festival and new programs for the coming year are all in the win column.
“We had over 5,000 visitors (at the art show) at Jefferson school and I’ve already had artists involved with it ask to be included in the coming year. That was the brainchild of Ed Pullen and it was wildly successful,” said Nikitas. “I’m very excited about our outreach program. We want to get out into nursing homes and other places where there are shut-ins and show them that there are other things to do besides just watch daytime TV.
“Maybe it’s watercolors or writing poetry or whatever. Just something simple, exciting and worthwhile to teach others.”
The group also continues to build relationships with area art and theatre programs in the various school corporations.
