ARGOS — Argos’ girls basketball team suffered through one of those nights where almost nothing went right.
The Dragons shot just 29.6 percent from the field –— of 12 from 3-point range — struggled to an 11-of-23 finish from the charity stripe, and got out-boarded by 11 in a 57-45 loss to Kankakee Valley in the Winter Classic first round Tuesday at Phil Weybright Gymnasium.
Kankakee Valley advances to Thursday’s title tilt against Rochester at 6:30 p.m., while Argos meets West Central in the consolation round, also Thursday, at 6:15 p.m. Both games are at Argos.
“We didn’t rebound; we didn’t hit jump shots; we didn’t hit free throws,” Argos head coach Nick Medich said. “When we don’t rebound, hit shots, and hit free throws, we’re not going to win. We didn’t play well. I don’t know that we did anything well tonight.
“It didn’t seem like we were in the focus to play a basketball game,” he added. “The girls said after the game they felt like they were playing to not lose instead of playing to win. You’ve got to play every game to win.”
