WALKERTON — John Glenn has announced golf coach Randy Schmeltz as the Falcon Award recipient for 2012.
The award will be presented at halftime of the boys basketball game against Penn Friday.
Schmeltz is in his 32nd year as an educator for the school corporation and is currently a physical education teacher at Urey Middle School, where he is the eighth grade girls basketball coach in addition to being the head coach of the Glenn High School boys and girls golf teams.
Over 32 years presiding over the boys golf program, Schmeltz has compiled a record of 349-235 with 25 winning seasons, including a run of 15 straight winning seasons. Under his guidance, the Falcons have won six Northern State Conference championships, 10 Marshall County championships and 11 other tourney titles. He has also produced two regional-qualifying teams and a state finalist squad.
Under Schmeltz, the boys golf team has seen an All-State team member, two Academic All-State golfers and two individual state finalists. Schmeltz himself has received six NSC coaching awards and was recognized in 1999 with the Indiana High School Golf Coaches Association’s Distinguished Service Award.
Over the last three seasons as head coach of the Lady Falcons, Schmeltz’s teams have compiled a record of 35-32, and the 2012 squad became the first team regional qualifier in program history.
In addition to his golf credentials, Schmeltz has been the head coach of Glenn’s eighth grade girls basketball team for the past two seasons with two tourney titles and an overall record of 17-6.
He was involved with the boys basketball program for 25 years with an overall coaching record of 251-222, including two undefeated seasons — a 16-0 eighth grade run in 1990 and a 17-0 finish coaching the seventh grade team in 2006 — as well as multiple tourney, NSC and Bi-County JV championships.
Friday’s regular-season boys basketball closer with Penn is slated to tip off at 7:30 p.m.
