PLYMOUTH — Kabelin Ace Hardware made an announcement earlier this week that they would be closing their Plymouth store.
“It is with a heavy heart that we must announce the closing of our family store,” read a statement released by the company. “For many years the store did quite well but over the last several years the big box store competition has become greater than we were able to overcome.”
Kabelin opened in Plymouth in 1996, and has been in three different locations in the city. The current store is located on Oak Road.
Kabelin Vice President Matt Moore said Thursday that the Plymouth store has been struggling since before its 2010 move to Oak Road from N. Kingston Road.
“We moved to Oak Road in hopes that the new location would be better for us…but it did not meet our expectations,” said Moore Thursday.
Moore said that 14 employees will be affected by the store closing.
“We hope to place many of them at another Kabelin store,” said Moore.
There’s no specific time line for the store to close its doors for the final time. Moore said that the exact closing date depends on how quickly the store’s current inventory sells. The Plymouth store is currently offering 20 percent off everything. The closing of the Plymouth store will not affect the other Kabelin Ace Hardware stores, located in LaPorte, Michigan City, Walkerton, South Bend, and Granger.
“All the other Kabelin stores are doing quite well,” said Moore.
He added, “I would really like to thank all the customers who helped support us over the years. We will really miss them.”
