ARGOS — The Argos Dragons beat a tough Winamac team behind a breakout performance from 6’6” junior Ben Carter.
Carter had an all around game with 21 points, nine rebounds and three blocks, all while shooting 7-of-8 from both the field and the line. When the Warriors tried to make a push late, Carter came up big, making a couple of huge rebounds in the last minute of the game while hitting 3 of 4 from the line to help seal the win, 62-54 at home at Phil Weybright Gymnasium Friday.
“Ben Carter scored 21 points, had some boards and did some nice things defensively for us. He also hit some clutch free throws,” said Argos coach Doug Snyder.
The first quarter was back and forth with neither team really stretching the lead out, and the score was 15-15 after one.
After good shooting in the first quarter, both teams went cold in the second and Winamac took a 24-23 lead into halftime.
Both teams got back on track in the third as still neither team was able to really break away with the score 38-38 after three.
“I thought both teams played extremely hard,” said Snyder. “Neither team gave up. We were able to build a little bit of a lead in the fourth and they brought it back close before we pushed it back out.”
The Dragons pushed that lead back out with a 9-0 run. Taylor Ogle’s ability to break Winamac’s press, along with the help of fellow guards Dominic Cataldo and Brian Snyder helped get some open looks pushing the ball up the floor.
Coach Snyder was pleased with the way his guards performed.
“Taylor had guys hanging all over him all night,” he said. “I thought he handled it well. I thought all three guards had a nice game handling the ball.”
It was a solid performance by the starting five as Max Bailey and Dominic Cataldo chipped in 14 and 11 points, respectively while Ogle and Snyder facilitated with five and six assists, respectively.
Argos is now 1-2 and Winamac drops to 0-1.
The Dragons will look to continue their winning ways as they head to LaVille Tuesday to take on the Lancers.
