HAMLET — Anyone who missed the first quarter at Oregon-Davis Thursday missed the girls basketball game itself.
The Class A No. 3 Lady Cats ran off 21 unanswered points to open the contest against LaVille, fired in 12 straight to cap off the opening frame, and forced 17 turnovers in the first eight minutes en route to a 74-37 doubling up of the Lancers at The Den.
“Basically (the start) was the whole game,” OD head coach Terry Minix said. “We settled in after the first quarter. That’s our style. Win, lose or draw we want to try to get out after teams early. In the second quarter we sat back and we’re not ones to want to sit back, but it’s nice to get a lead and then coast.”
OD junior point guard Ashley Campbell turned in a rare triple-double with 17 points, 15 assists, and 10 rebounds, while classmate Jessica Avarone scored 17 of her game-high 24 points in the first half. Avarone’s triple off a Campbell dish opened the scoring and set the tone for a frenetic first stanza dominated by the Cats’ trapping full-court pressure which led to 19 points off turnovers during that span.
“(Campbell) was doing more facilitating tonight, even though she still scored 17 points,” Minix, whose team led 35-3 at the first-quarter break, said. “She was looking to pass, and she was looking to rebound; we had her with 10 rebounds. She’s an all-around player. Jessie shot the ball well. When we’ve got Jess hanging 3s and Campbell throwing dimes that makes it tough for anybody.”
Meanwhile, the Lancers, completely confounded by OD’s press, finished just 1-of-8 from the field in the opening stanza; the only field goal a Hannah Herbster rebound basket at the 3:58 mark.
“It is hard to simulate how hard (OD) plays,” LaVille head coach Kevin McCullough said. “Give credit to OD. They hooped it up. We wanted to play OD before the Bi-County, and they were gracious enough to play us. We appreciate that.”
And while 5-foot Alicia McIntosh, the third of OD’s trio of high-scoring junior guards, struggled from the field, her defense more than compensated for the offensive off night.
“It all started with Alicia McIntosh,” Minix said of his team’s defense. “She may not have shot the ball well, but her defense was phenomenal. She may not be big, but she’s mean.”
Also for the Cats, 5-11 junior Haley Collings chipped in 14 points, seven rebounds, and five steals in a solid all-around effort that included a number of baskets in transition, and freshman Lexi Minix contributed four assists and four steals.
“Haley played really well,” the OD skipper said. “The scary thing is how well she runs the floor, and she was able to score in transition a few times. She has good hands, and we’re still working on her feet. She floats; she’s almost like a gazelle the way she gets up and down the floor.”
For the Lancers, 5-10 junior forward Kelsey Gurtner battled her way to 18 points and 10 rebounds.
LaVille actually outscored OD in each of the second and fourth quarters, but that first quarter coupled with 42 LaVille turnovers for the game prevented the Lancers from pulling any closer than 27 points over the final 24 minutes.
“When we trade this film around I expect teams to say, ‘We need to put pressure on them,’” McCullough said. “Our ballhandling has been a problem. We have to show some resilience and try to battle through it.
“We did still have some effort,” he added. “There’s still a lot of basketball to play. We’re not canceling the rest of the season. We’re still going to practice (Friday). We’re still going to Jimtown Saturday thinking we can execute some things.”
OD heads to North Judson Tuesday, while LaVille travels to Jimtown Saturday.
