PLYMOUTH 3, CULVER 1
Plymouth missed a penalty kick less than 3 minutes in and it nearly came back to haunt the Rockies.
Up 2-0 after goals by Kendra Reininga — her first of the season and Plymouth's first Tuesday in the 20th minute — and Krista Vanlue, Culver striker Whitney Sanders beat out a pair of Plymouth defenders for a solo goal in the 48th minute to cut the score to 2-1.
There was a foul outside the box a few minutes later that initially looked like a penalty kick situation, but a free kick was instead called. The shot sailed errant, and Emily Wilson scored on a Courtney Hersick pass in the 63rd minute to bring the score to its final.
"Hats off to Culver. There was a 7 to 12-minute stretch in the middle of the second half where they really were taking it to us," said Plymouth head coach Joe Morris. "That goal I think energized them. (Sanders) is a great player, but she also seemed to catch double fire when they scored that goal, and for a minute there when it was still 2-1 where we had the silly foul outside the box and you think 'Wow, is that in the box?'... that could've been a turning point. If it's inside the box, and they can put it in the back of the net then we've got a dog fight."
