MARSHALL CO. — Though Marshall County hasn’t been significantly impacted by mega-storm “Sandy,” there are ways that local residents can help victims suffering on the east coast.
Rebecca DeLine of the northern Indiana American Red Cross chapter said that extra training sessions for volunteers have been organized. One of those sessions is Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the St. Joseph County Red Cross office in South Bend.
“We are setting up training for those interested in getting engaged right away,” said DeLine Thursday. “As of today, we’ve deployed about 24 volunteers from the area.”
The St. Joseph County Red Cross office also oversees Marshall, Fulton, Pulaski, and Starke counties.
“We can’t commit that (volunteers) will go (to the east coast), but we will do the whole application process and background check,” said DeLine. “If nothing else, we will get them involved locally.”
Those interested in participating in Saturday’s training session, or any other sessions planned to help Sandy victims, can call 574-234-0191 for more information.
Another way to help is to donate blood, as more than 325 scheduled blood drives have been canceled due to the storm, said Wendy Glaser, donation recruitment representative for the Red Cross Indiana and Ohio blood services.
“Our national headquarters moved blood into the areas most likely to be affected by Sandy so the people there would have some…but now the drives have been canceled,” said Glaser.
The cancellation of blood drives in 13 states has resulted in a shortfall of nearly 11,000 units of blood and platelets so far, added Glaser.
Upcoming Red Cross blood drives include Nov. 5 at LaVille Elementary School from 2:30 to 6 p.m., Nov. 7 at Argos Elementary School from 1 to 6 p.m., and Nov. 11 at Culver Academy from 12:30 to 5:30 p.m.
Appointments can be made online at www.redcrossblood.org , but walk-ins are also welcome.
“Another thing we’ve encouraged people to do is donate — financial support is always welcome,” said Glaser. “People can go to our website to donate or text “REDCROSS” to 90999 to donate $10. That will show up on your phone bill.”
