The Culver Chamber of Commerce-sponsored annual scarecrow contest is returning to Culver after a year's hiatus, and everyone is invited to participate in the community event. Merchants, businesses, individuals, church groups, schools groups, organizations or anyone else who wants to have fun and promote community spirit may -- as in years past -- register and create a scarecrow in one of several pre-designated display areas around the town of Culver.
The contest registration deadline is Friday, October 8, and the Chamber will notify participants of their pole location and provide a sign for their scarecrow once all registration forms have been received. The forms will be available at Café Max, Fisher & Company Clothiers, Culver Coffee Company, and Osborn’s Minimart. Scarecrows may be put up Friday, October 15 and Saturday, October 16.
Voting for winners is the one area of the event markedly changed from years past. Rather than community voting by "ballot boxes" around town, as before, this year a selected panel of judges will decide contest winners. Voting will take place Monday, October 18 or Tuesday, October 19.
Breakdown for all scarecrows will be no later than Monday, November 1, with the scarecrow, cornstalks and any other materials used, to be removed.
The entry fee of $10 includes cornstalks and a sign for the name of the scarecrow. Scarecrows must be five to six feet in height and must be handcrafted and secured to the light post unobtrusively (twine, cable ties, fishing line). No sharp objects are allowed; please keep in mind that the scarecrows will be exposed to various weather conditions. Straw or hay may be used for accents, and creative scarecrow names -- with no corporate logos or business names -- are needed.
The “Best of Show” winner will receive a gift basket filled with great gifts and goodies. Please contact Marian Reinhold at 574-842-3337 with questions or for a registration form. Checks should be payable to: Culver Chamber of Commerce Scarecrow Contest, 730 School Street, Culver, IN 46511.
