PLYMOUTH — Jason Nemeth, of Plymouth, joined the Army National Guard September, 12, 2006 and was assigned to Company B, 2nd Battalion, 151st Infantry. He was deployed to Afghanistan in August of 2009 for a 10 month tour. During this time the Company participated in several combat missions, including one for which Nemeth was awarded the Army Commendation Medal with Valor Device. From that moment forward Nemeth experienced severe Post Tramatic Stress Disorder, including ongoing nightmares of the face of one enemy he had killed. When the Company returned to the United States June 5, 2010, Sgt. Nemeth sought help through the Indiana National Guard to assist him in dealing with his emotional challenges, but to no avail. Nemeth committed suicide June 29, 2011, at 26 years old.
A 5K run/walk will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. in Nemeth's memory, starting at the Conservation Clubhouse. Donations will be accepted in any amount, and all will go toward a scholarship fund in Nemeth's name at Plymouth High School. Drinks and snacks will be provided.
