Knox man charged with murder, more

KNOX — Starke County Prosecutor Nicholas Bourff filed a formal charge of murder against Gary W. Chavez, 57, of Knox, for his alleged involvement in the Friday, June 6 slaying of his estranged wife, Kimberly S. Chavez, 50, of Portage, who was discovered dead in Chavez's Knox home last Friday, after an alleged  crime spree that involved three carjackings, a hostage situation, and led multiple police departments across four counties ended with Chavez shooting himself after he lost control of the vehicle he was traveling in on I-65 S. in Lake County.

State Police and Better Business Bureau Warn About IRS Scam

REGION — The Indiana State Police in Fort Wayne and the Better Business Bureau (BBB) of Northern Indiana are teaming up to remind citizens of the scam circulating in which callers purport to be with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

According to the BBB, consumers are receiving very menacing calls from individuals, who state that they are with the IRS. The reason stated for their call is that they’re collecting on taxes owed since 2002. Threats of arrest and jail time are made, if immediate payment isn’t given.

Board of Zoning Appeals approves set back variances

June 11, 2014

PLYMOUTH — Two local property owners received the OK to add on or build on their property now that the county Board of Zoning Appeals approved the requested variances Tuesday.

The property owners have to comply with board requests, such as removing a fence and placing a proposed garage in line with the neighbors', but can go ahead with plans.

Plymouth Public Library pet parade Wednesday

June 10, 2014

PLYMOUTH — Show off your pet at the Plymouth Public Library pet parade at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 12. If you do not have a live pet, bring a stuffed animal. Keep your pet on a leash or in a container. Meet on the sidewalk in front of the library on Washington Street. Rain date will be Thursday, June 13, at 11 a.m.

Chavez woman's death ruled homicide

KNOX — Starke County Coroner, Kris Rannells has released the preliminary autopsy results for Kimberly S. Chavez, 50, of Portage, who was found dead at the Knox home of her estranged husband Gary Chavez last Friday afternoon.
Rannells said findings revealed that Kimberly died as the result of multiple blunt force trauma. Her death has been ruled a homicide.
Gary Chavez is still listed in critical condition at Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn, Ill.

Argos adds taxes and rezones areas

ARGOS — Home owners in Argos can expect to pay a little more on their tax bill. The Argos Town Council passed an ordinance establishing the Cumulative Capital Development (CCD) Fund. The lack of the CCD in 2013 cost the town $18,000.
Ordinance 2014-7 was also passed during the meeting. The ordinance deals with the newly acquired industrial development property being rezoned. It was Agriculture and the ordinance passed making it zoned Heavy Industrial.

Budget time is near

MARSHALL COUNTY — During the regular County Council meeting Monday morning the 2015 budget discussions began. Representatives from the Highway Department, Sheriff's Department, Home Detention, County Surveyor and the Plan Commission explained some of their requests. County Auditor Penny Lukenbill had requested that any department planning an additional budget expense in excess of $10,000 give the council a preview before turning in budgets in July.

Slain woman's identity released by Starke Sheriff's Department

KNOX — A woman found slain in a Knox home Friday, June 6 has been identified by Starke County Sheriff's Department as Kimberly S. Chavez, 50, of Portage.
Kimberly was the estranged wife of Gary W. Chavez, 57, of Knox, who led multiple police agencies on a high speed chase across four counties Friday afternoon.
