PHS Class of 2014 graduates

PLYMOUTH — Saying goodbye is not easy. More than 250 Plymouth High School students did just that at the 139th commencement ceremony at Plymouth High School Friday evening.
The class of 2014 motto “Life brings us tears, smiles and memories- the tears dry, the smalls fade, but the memories last forever” echoed throughout the evening.
“First I’d like to express how grateful, humbled and extremely nervous I am to have been given the honor to speak tonight,” began class Valedictorian Travis Tredway.

Grant will help identify to reclaim contaminated sites in the county

MARSHALL COUNTY/PLYMOUTH/BOURBON — A $600,000 grant will help the county identify and reclaim property once used for commercial or industrial purposes. The funding will pay for soil testing and the cost of creating a county-wide inventory of sites considered brownfields that may be reused after cleanup.

LaVille schools raises per run rate for bus drivers

LAPAZ/LAKEVILLE — The Union North United School Corp. board approved a rate increase for school bus drivers, effective this summer and into next school year. The increase of $10 per run will help the school recruit and retain good drivers, according to school officials.

Details released in Starke murder, carjacking case

STARKE Co. — Starke County Prosecutor Nicholas Bourff released the details of the case surrounding Gary Chavez and the murder of his estranged wife Kimberly Chavez today (Wednesday, June 11.)
According to the probable cause affidavit, the Starke County Sheriff Department's 911 Dispatch center received a call at approximately 4 p.m. Friday, June 6 from Bryant Wagner, a man who claimed to have been kidnapped in the parking lot at Bailey's Discount Center in North Judson.

Knox man charged with murder, more

KNOX — Starke County Prosecutor Nicholas Bourff filed a formal charge of murder against Gary W. Chavez, 57, of Knox, for his alleged involvement in the Friday, June 6 slaying of his estranged wife, Kimberly S. Chavez, 50, of Portage, who was discovered dead in Chavez's Knox home last Friday, after an alleged  crime spree that involved three carjackings, a hostage situation, and led multiple police departments across four counties ended with Chavez shooting himself after he lost control of the vehicle he was traveling in on I-65 S. in Lake County.

State Police and Better Business Bureau Warn About IRS Scam

REGION — The Indiana State Police in Fort Wayne and the Better Business Bureau (BBB) of Northern Indiana are teaming up to remind citizens of the scam circulating in which callers purport to be with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

According to the BBB, consumers are receiving very menacing calls from individuals, who state that they are with the IRS. The reason stated for their call is that they’re collecting on taxes owed since 2002. Threats of arrest and jail time are made, if immediate payment isn’t given.

Board of Zoning Appeals approves set back variances

June 11, 2014

PLYMOUTH — Two local property owners received the OK to add on or build on their property now that the county Board of Zoning Appeals approved the requested variances Tuesday.

The property owners have to comply with board requests, such as removing a fence and placing a proposed garage in line with the neighbors', but can go ahead with plans.

Plymouth Public Library pet parade Wednesday

PLYMOUTH — Show off your pet at the Plymouth Public Library pet parade at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 12. If you do not have a live pet, bring a stuffed animal. Keep your pet on a leash or in a container. Meet on the sidewalk in front of the library on Washington Street. Rain date will be Thursday, June 13, at 11 a.m.
