Highway Department — two bosses instead of one

MARSHALL COUNTY — The county has been without a superintendent for the Highway Department for several months. The general foreman and other crew members have stepped up to fill the void while the County Commissioners review potential replacements. Commissioner Deb Griewank asked the County Council to approve a recommendations made by the personnel committee last week.

Sewer project bids are in

PLYMOUTH — Five bids were submitted for the Beerenbrook and Jefferson Street sewer project during last nights City of Plymouth's Board of Works regular meeting. The bids averaged near a half-million dollars. The five bids will be reviewed before a final decision is made.
The 2014 street and sidewalk project bid was accepted at over $300,000. Street closures were discussed for Pennsylvania Ave and parking resolutions were also made. For complete details see today's Pilot News.

Gas leak on Oak Road

PLYMOUTH — Police have reported a gas leak near TCU on Oak Road in the vicinity of Harrison and Jim Neu streets. Motorists are asked to avoid the area.

LaVille Schools purchasing used school buses

LAPAZ/LAKEVILLE — The Union-North United School Corporation approved to purchase two used school buses, a 2006 model at $25,000 and a 1997 bus at $4,000 that will be used as extra buses according to the needs of the corporation.

The Board approved $8,040 for personnel ECA positions for the 2014 to 2015 school year, as well as terminating the employment of Ginger Holbert and Elizabeth Horvath as part-time Title I Aides. The termination will result in the school corporation’s ability to consolidate two part-time positions into one full time position.

4-H 10-year members honored at Fair's opening ceremony

ARGOS — 52 members of 4-H who have invested 10 years were recognized as part of the annual Marshall County 4-H Fair's opening ceremonies.

The Fair opened yesterday and will continue through July 19

St. Joseph Regional Medical Center celebrates with annual 'Gala'

PLYMOUTH — The annual "Catch the Spirit" gala was well attended by about 260 people, all of whom were involved in some way with St. Joseph Regional Medical Center.

The gala was both a celebration and a kick off for a fundraising campaign. Honored at the event were the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ who received the Community Spirit Award.

Chickens ruffling feathers in City

PLYMOUTH — The language of Plymouth's ordinance concerning livestock in the city limits is causing confusion, as reports of animals, especially chickens has increased since a board of zoning appeals meeting last week.

The ordinance can be interpreted two ways, making enforcement difficult, the City code enforcement officer said.

The Snyders in concert tonight at Centennial Park

PLYMOUTH — This Friday, tonight, Encore Performing Arts’ Music in the Park features the return of Southside Denny & the Snyders, blues artists extraordinaire. There’ve been some changes since their last appearance two years ago.

Though locals still remember them as ‘Southside’ referring to South Bend, Snyder moved his family north to Montreal, Canada in 2007. And the rest of the band, his offspring, have sprouted.

His daughter Lorrie, now 18, does vocals and bass and son Philip, 14, still plays the drums. And Denny cut his hair. The ponytail is gone.

Open class exhibits accepted July 12
