Young wrestlers combines talent, faith to overcome challenges

April 24, 2013

PLYMOUTH — Graham Calhoun isn't quite like other boys his age.
For starters, the Riverside Elementary fifth-grader has been ranked the No. 1 wrestler in the country in his division on TheMat.com's Future Olympian rankings.

But Graham was also born a little different.

He was born with only one kidney, a fact that the Calhoun family only discovered a little over three years ago in November of 2009.

During wrestling practice one day, Graham noticed blood in his urine. When he went to the hospital to get checked out, the doctor gave him his life-changing diagnosis.

Weather radios programmed for free

April 24, 2013

PLYMOUTH — Marshall County Emergency Management, Walgreen's and the Marshall County Amateur Radio Club will program NOAA weather radios from 7 a.m. - 12 p.m. Saturday at the Michigan Street Walgreen's.

“ We don’t have the ability to put warning sirens in every location in Marshall County, Clyde Avery, Emergency Management director, said. “The down side to sirens is that they warn people who are outside to seek shelter, but don’t give them specifics about the kind of emergency.”

Carnival returns to 2013 4-H fair

April 23, 2013

MARSHALL CO. — The carnival is back.
Marshall County 4-H Fair Board President Ron Rensberger said that after not having a carnival at the fair last year, the board has decided to bring it back for this year’s fair.
“People wanted the carnival, but they wanted a good carnival — something that looks good and is safe,” said Rensberger, adding, “That’s what we all want.”
The carnival that used to be at the fair is now unavailable because of cost and scheduling changes, said Rensberger. A new carnival called Circus City Amusements will be entertaining fairgoers.

Author visits two county schools

April 23, 2013

ARGOS/PLYMOUTH – Writing is like showing beef steers? Really?
Yes, said author Michelle Houts, as she spoke to students at Argos Elementary and Washington Discovery Elementary in Plymouth Friday. She was in Marshall County to headline the Young Author’s Conference in Bremen the same evening.
Her children’s book “The Beef Princess of Practical County” was not unknown to the students at either school. They had clearly been reading (or hearing, in the case of younger students) the book prior to the author’s appearance.

And Weston had some tips for potential entertainers.

Plymouth seeing effects of rains

April 19, 2013

PLYMOUTH — As the spring rains continue local crews are watching to see what areas may flood.

The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch for Marshall County and the NWS advanced hydrologic prediction service has the Yellow River crest at around 14 feet late Saturday night into Sunday morning.

"That's still about a foot below what we had when Mayor Senter first took office," said Plymouth Street Department Superintendent Jim Marquardt. "Having taken a lot of the houses down in flood area will minimize any impact that a flood has now but it will sure play havoc with traffic."
