First Bark For Life held for dogs, owners

PLYMOUTH — Cancer is a disease that often leaves a footprint of fear and despair.
Saturday, a group of people and their canine companions left their own footprint (or pawprint) in a step towards hope in the battle against this insidious disease.
Saturday was the inaugural Bark For Life fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. Held by the tennis courts at Centennial Park, the event not only raised $560 for the ongoing battle against cancer, but allowed family and friends alike the opportunity to acknowledge the loyal companionship and healing influence of man’s best friend.

Help to ‘Warm Up Marshall County’

PLYMOUTH — Don’t let the warm summer-like days fool you. Winter is coming and when it does, the weather forecasters predict a cold one.
Steve Keiser, chairman of the 12th annual Warm Up Marshall County Coat Drive, is a bit worried.
Actually, he is a lot worried.
“With the economy like it is, there are people, especially children, who will face the winter without the benefit of a warm coat.”
Shivering children is what got Steve, the father of three, started on the project in the first place.

Average number of students up for Plymouth Schools

PLYMOUTH — The enrollment for the Plymouth Schools is up 34.72 students over last year.
The number reflects the way in which the state qualifies students as full-time, part-time, or half-time.
For instance, despite the fact that the kindergarten program in Plymouth is full-time, the state counts those enrolled as half-time in terms of reimbursement status.

Some construction in city streets will cause delays

PLYMOUTH – Motorists will find it a little difficult in spots around Plymouth next week as construction will be taking place in two locations.
Monitoring wells will be placed on Stanley Drive Tuesday and Thursday wells will be placed at Michigan and Jefferson Streets.
The wells are required by the Indiana Department of Envir-onmental Management to monitor ground water purity in the area, according to Plymouth City Engineer Rick Gaul.

School building needs presented

PLYMOUTH — A meeting of the Board of Directors of the Plymouth Multischool Building Corporation was held Thursday.
Plymouth Schools Maintenance Director Dave Schoof presented a number of projects, primarily concerning infrastructure, roofing, and HVAC equipment to the board over the last several months.
At this point, the funding for completion of the projects that would normally be taken out of the Capital Projects Fund is being considered under a Qualified School Construction Bond (QSCB) in the proposed amount of $4,175,000.

Neighborhood Center Food Pantry ‘running on E’

PLYMOUTH — Fill your belly, feed the hungry. The Marshall County Neighborhood Center (MCNC) is asking you to think about those in need the next time you visit the grocery store. 
“Our food pantry is nearly out of food,” says Gino Jefferies, lead food pantry volunteer for MCNC. “We are no longer able to do a (full) basket for our clients. They are getting about half of what they normally get. The way we have been hit lately, I think we can get maybe two or three pantry times done before we are completely out of food.”

Zehner has perspective in fight with cancer

PLYMOUTH — A visit for stomach pain turned into surgery.
That is the story of Don Zehner, who thought he might need a doctor’s prescription for some stomach pain and hours after his appointment with his doctor found himself in surgery.
“Looking back on it, I probably would have liked the ability to take some time before surgery,” he said. “I came in having a little gastrointestinal pain – three days later I was still in critical care – four days after that I was still on a feeding tube.”

ENL/Migrant Education discussed at Plymouth

PLYMOUTH — The Plymouth School Board heard a report on ENL (English as a Native Language)/ Migrant Education Thursday.
Presenting the information was Jeni Hirschy who serves as the assistant principal at Riverside and also heads up the ENL/Migrant programs within the corporation.

Fifth-grader inspires her classmates

PLYMOUTH — It’s easy to see why Maria Gonzalez’ classmates love her.
The little girl who loves to read and play board games with her family will be fighting a brain tumor for the second time in her young life. That fight has brought an outpouring of support from her friends and teachers at Plymouth’s Riverside Intermediate School. The wave of support is now spreading.
In a week of activities designed to help Maria and her family as they face radiation treatments at Indiana University Hospital in Bloomington, Riverside alone was able to raise over $2,000.

Robert Schultz honored for 50 years of service

PLYMOUTH — The theme of the 2010 4-H Leader appreciation program, “Volunteers Leading the Way” could not have been more fitting.
Although not all of the leaders being recognized were able to attend the program held Tuesday night, 263 names of volunteers appeared in the program. Of those, one-fourth has been volunteering as leaders for 20 years or more.
