The Culver Board of Zoning Appeals had a full agenda with two continuances and five new petitions for variance of ordinance standards. The continuance for Dave Pitera, 522 S. Plymouth St. was quickly handled and his petition of a north side yard setback to allow a garage addition was approved.

Tyner; Tippecanoe offices under review

INDIANAPOLIS — The Tyner and Tippacanoe post offices are two of around 95 low-activity post offices in Indiana placed recently on a list for review by the United States Postal Service (USPS).
Mary Dando, a USPS representative, said Wednesday that the fact that the offices were under review did not necessarily mean they would be closing.
“They are on the list — that means they are under study, but there won’t be a decision made one way or the other until December (or later),” said Dando.

Area BKs feature new fountain drink machines; expanded menus

LAPAZ — A line at the drink station started to form around lunch time Tuesday in the Lapaz Burger King. Coca-Cola had just installed their new drink machine—featuring 125 flavors—that morning and these lunch customers were among the first to try it out.
“It’s different—it’s pretty slick actually,” said Randy Walker as he used the machine’s touch screen to choose his beverage.
Walker, a trucker who resides in Kentucky, said he passes through the area about once a week. He likes the new machine, but is not too sure about the 125 flavors.
“I’ll stick to Coke,” said Walker, smiling.

Ecology, geology of Lake Max slated for Aug. 6 bicycle tour

The Bike Barn, 103 E. Lake Shore Drive in Culver, is sponsoring a a glacial geology and ecology bicycle tour led by wildlife ecologist Carl Strang Saturday, August 6.
The ride will focus on how and when glaciers created the area in and around Culver, including Lake Maxinkuckee. Participants will also learn about kames, marls, bogs and the types of plants and animals that call them home.

Mayfield outlines summer school highlights, changes

Tony Mayfield, Director of Culver Summer Schools and Camps, shared a wealth of information on this year's program -- as well as some tidbits on upcoming items of interest -- last week with members of Culver's Kiwanis Club, who dined at the school's Lay Dining Center for their weekly meeting.
Mayfield, a graduate of Culver Military Academy who spent ten years at the school as history instructor before taking on several summer-related positions including a stint as Woodcraft Camp director, said so far this has "been a great year" for the summer program.

Museum will host ‘Culver History Film Fest’ August 1

Culver’s rich history will come alive in a unique way starting Monday, August 1 with the first installment of Culver Academies Museum & Gift Shop’s “Culver History Film Fest.” For several evenings this summer, rare historical films culled from Culver Academies’ archives -- many recently restored and remastered from vintage, reel films -- will be screened at the museum, located at 102 S. Main Street in downtown Culver. Introductions to each film will provide historical context, and refreshments will be served.

Your 3,000 mile oil change was due 4,000 miles ago? Oliver Ford in Plymouth is there to help you while they help others.
Oliver is currently offering free oil changes and car washes at the dealership on Jefferson Street in Plymouth until Aug. 1 — unless you own a diesel vehicle. The only request in return is for you to help area kids get ready to go back to school.
Teaming with Plymouth FOP Lodge #195 and the Indiana State Police, Oliver Ford will give that car wash and oil change for your donation to the “Pack-A-Backpack” program.

Children's book authors visit City Center; raise awareness for a cause

PLYMOUTH — How many children have an imaginary friend who is a pig? Authors Chip Gilbertson and Gina Restivo use a pig to tell the inspiring story of a boy who learns to believe in himself in their first book, “Fly, Danny, Fly.” Behind the sweet narrative and colorful illustrations, however, is a real cause.
A portion of the proceeds from the book will go to the Danny Did Foundation, a non-profit founded by Mike and Mariann Stanton of Chicago after their 4-year-old son Danny died in 2009 from Sudden Unexplained Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP).

PLYMOUTH — Barn Quilts have been popping up all over Marshall County and if you haven’t yet had the opportunity to take the Marshall County Barn Quilt trail — well the Marshall County Convention and Visitors Bureau has made it easy for you. The Barn Quilt Trail takes you through picturesque country and main roads from which you can view the barn quilts. There are two ways that you can find where the barn quilts are situated. ONE: For a self-guided tour just stop by the Visitor’s Bureau at 220 N. Center St.
