Former pilot able to fly again

KNOX — It was 1945 when Viola (Hawman) Serrano, who now resides in Knox, first got her pilot’s license. She was 17 years old, and a presentation by the Civil Air Patrol at her Michigan high school piqued her curiosity.
Serrano, now 83, is losing her memory — but one thing she does remember is how to fly a plane. Serrano navigated a flight out of the Fulton County Airport last Friday with her daughter, Mirna Dault, in tow.

Plymouth 11-year-old's design chosen for Riley holiday cards

PLYMOUTH — Brieanna Slonaker, 11, of Plymouth, has spent a lot of time at Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis since she was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease in 2005. The disease that causes chronic fatigue and inability to digest food keeps Brieanna in the hospital quite a bit. Fortunately, said mom Cindy Slonaker, the arts and crafts available for children at Riley’s help keep Brieanna’s spirits up.

13th Road bridge completed

The new and improved bridge on 13th Road, connecting State Road 17 and Highway 31, was completed last week. The bridge is now open to traffic.

Cancer Association of Marshall County holds annual meeting

The Cancer Association of Marshall County held their annual board meeting Oct. 25. The group began assisting cancer patients within the county in 1962. Funding began with monies from the estates of Welcome R. Ebersole, Grace Moslander, and Roy Hawk. The Zeta Zeta Chapter of Delta Theta Tau implemented the program by providing transportation to cancer patients and providing financial assistance to patient for the purchase of drugs related to cancer care. Funds to provide transportation are not utilized as often since local hospitals are conveniently located.

Coffehouse Trivia Night in Culver Tuesday

The Plymouth Rotary Club and the Culver Coffee Company invite local businesses to participate in a “Coffeehouse Trivia Night” Tuesday, November 15, from 7 to 9 p.m.

The schedule is as follows: rules explained (7 p.m.); round 1 (7:15 p.m.); round 2 (7:45 p.m.); round 3 (8:15 p.m.); awards ceremony (8:45 p.m.).

The event is in support of the Rotary Quizbowl State Championship at Ancilla College, which will take place March 3, 2012, at the Culver Coffee Company, Lake Shore Drive in Culver.

New lights at Pioneer Road and Lincolnway intersection

These 4-way red flashing lights, installed last week at the intersection of Pioneer Road and Lincolnway Highway, assist drivers during the rain Monday morning. Two overhead street lights have also been added to the intersection for increased safety.

Dems select Schmuhl as Democratic party chair

KNOX - The votes from the 2nd District Democratic Precinct Committee are in: Mike Schmuhl, 28, has been chosen as the new Democratic Party Chair for the 2nd District.
Schmuhl’s background includes working on successful campaigns such as Pete Buttigieg’s campaign for South Bend mayor as well as Congressman Joe Donnelly’s 2010 reelection campaign.

Midtown Men's `60s sounds, art gallery on tap in Culver Monday

Culver Academies' Huffington Concert Series continues Monday evening with the Midtown Men, four members of the original cast of Broadway’s "Jersey Boys," live onstage at Eppley Auditorium, starting at 7:30 p.m.

While "The Jersey Boys" was centered on its stars' portrayals of the 1960s Motown group the Four Seasons, Midtown Men will offer a broader, but similar sampling of 1960s fare to the audience, ranging from Motown hits to the Beatles, the Beach Boys to the Mamas and the Papas, "a journey through all the iconic groups of the '60s," member Daniel Reichard told one media source.

Authors of Culver Girls Academy history book, dean lead museum event Nov. 16

As it continues its year-long celebration of the 40th anniversary of the Culver Girls Academy (formerly Culver Academy for Girls), the Culver Academies Museum & Gift Shop, located at 102 S. Main Street in downtown Culver, will host the authors of the upcoming, "Voices of CGA: A History of Culver Girls Academy," the very first book to chronicle the history of the school.
