Glenn continues state spelling dominance

WALKERTON — Chemists may want to examine if there is something in the atmosphere near John Glenn High School that somehow makes one an outstanding speller.
Saturday, John Glenn High School’s Spell Bowl team accomplished what is becoming a traditional feat — winning the state championship. For the 15th time in the last 24 years, the JGHS spellers captured the Div. 2 Spell Bowl State Championship with a score of 86 of 90 words spelled correctly at Purdue University.

County continues to debate replacement hiring

PLYMOUTH — Marshall County continues to work out employment issues in the wake of its tightening budget.
In order to meet constraints earlier in the year the Marshall County Commissioners suggested a policy to the Marshall County Council of a freeze on any new hiring and in order to continue to reduce costs, also suggested that the county adopt a reduction of employees by attrition — by not replacing employees in any department that decided to retire or leave for other employment.

1 killed in 2-car crash

PLYMOUTH — A two-vehicle crash Friday night claimed the life of a Plymouth woman, and injured four others.
Doris R. Emmons, 85, died Saturday morning at 1:30 a.m. from injuries she received in a crash at Plymouth Goshen Trail and U.S. 30.
County Police Officer Rick Kanarr investigated the crash Friday night that occurred at 6:11 p.m. His report indicates that Emmons was northbound on Plymouth-Goshen Trail in a 1998 Toyota Aviaon and crossing U.S. 30. Another vehicle in front of Emmons stopped in the median and Emmons stopped in the middle of the highway behind the other vehicle.

PLYMOUTH — The city of Plymouth will be losing a law enforcement officer to retirement but there will be a new sheriff in town.
Long time Plymouth police officer and former Plymouth Police Chief Tom Chamberlin will be stepping down from his position at the PPD in order to take over his new responsibilities as the newly elected Sheriff of Marshall County. While Chamberlin will miss his duties in Plymouth he is looking forward to a new opportunity.

ARGOS — Imagine being 17 and having to take three insulin injections every day just to survive.
Now imagine being in third grade when you were diagnosed as a diabetic. Kala Williams of Argos Community Schools has a very special senior project. The week of Nov. 15-19 will be Diabetes Awareness Week at Argos Community Schools. During this week, the students will be able to get their blood sugar checked so they can be aware of their risks. If the current trend continues, one in three children will develop Diabetes.

COLUMBUS, Ga. — While many of his fellow Plymouth grads spent time in college classes the past five years, 2004 Plymouth grad Seth Hunter has had a bit different classroom on the way to his bright future.
Enlisting in the Air Force out of school, Hunter’s rise up the ranks has included three combat tours of duty in Iraq, and most recently graduation from the United States Army’s prestigious Ranger School. A Staff Sergeant in the Air Force, Hunter is one of less than 200 Airmen in the history of the Air Force to successfully complete the course.

PLYMOUTH — A family history of service is having an impact.
Veterans Day observance at Jefferson Elementary has traditionally included a message from a local Veteran. This year’s speaker is an everyday influence on the school’s students.
Custodian Kirk Clark interacts with the students at the school every day, and coming from a family full of Veterans — his father was in the Army (82nd Airborne), two brothers in the Marine Corp, one in the Air Force and one in the Navy — he’s inspired a whole new group of young people to service.

PLYMOUTH — Pride for the United States and respect for those that serve or served it in the armed forces was shown Thursday during a Veterans Day ceremony held on the lawn of the Marshall County Courthouse at the memorial monument.
