Bremen Holy Walk celebrates 30 years

December 6, 2010

BREMEN — Every December for the last 30 years the Bremen community gets together to recreate a miracle: the Holy Walk.
For an event to bring together over 200 volunteers, involving area churches of varying denominations for the last 30 years is also a miracle. This miracle is due in large part to the Huff family. Jim, his wife Loretta, son Max Huff and his wife Linda have lent their farm, time and leadership to this event every year. Each year people from all over the region and from other countries come to experience this unique event.

Rock-A-Thon for Eric Day set for Tuesday

December 6, 2010

PLYMOUTH — Tuesday, Dec. 7, at the Plymouth vs. Tippecanoe Valley basketball game, a dedicated group of Plymouth High School students will be “rocking” the night away for Eric Day.
Day is a 2010 PHS graduate and very involved in the community. He works at the little league baseball diamond umpiring and loves to be a role model for young boys. Day is recovering from recent brain surgeries and complications from them.
Day also has had to receive physical therapy during his recovery process.

Racer Keck has an active pastime

December 6, 2010

PLYMOUTH — It’s no secret that many of today’s senior citizens are leading active lives, but former Plymouth resident Denny (Dennis) Keck brings a new meaning to the term active.
At age 65, he spends much of his time competing on the NHRA (National Hot Rod Association) circuit and with his 1990 Corvette. He’s been racing on the circuit for the past seven years.
Keck graduated in 1965 from Plymouth High School and within five years had made his way to Wheatland, Wy.

Former John Glenn High School basketball players thank the coach that taught them not only skills on the court, but off as well:

Coach Hutton has left his mark

December 3, 2010

You don’t have to look far to see the mark Dan Hutton has left on Indiana high school basketball.
Just check your local high school gym. Chances are, he’s done the artwork.
The longtime John Glenn girls basketball coach and painter has created murals and floor art for numerous gymnasiums around the state — including, among many others, Northern State Conference schools John Glenn, Triton, Culver, LaVille, Knox and New Prairie — and Tuesday, he was honored with the 2010 NSC Service Award for that artwork and his many other contributions to the conference during a ceremony at Glenn.

DMHO rocks a full house

December 3, 2010

A nearly packed house saw a musical homecoming for the holidays as Denver Bierman and the Mile High Orchestra gave their high energy all in a Christmas show at Plymouth Wesleyan Church last night.
“As always, it was really good to be home — and just great to be able to kick off our Christmas tour here at my home church,” said Bierman. “I really can’t thank everybody enough, all the people here in town that helped us make this possible. None of it could have happened without a lot of people helping us out.”

Schools required to have class take ISTEP online

December 2, 2010

A decision made by the Indiana State Board of Education in August has the DOE (Department of Education) evaluating the readiness of Indiana schools to administer the multiple-choice portion of the ISTEP+ assessments test electronically.
The DOE is requiring schools to have at least one grade level in each school building with grades 3-8 take that portion of the test online.
Only the multiple-choice portion is offered online; all students will take the applied skills portion of the test on paper.

WTCA teams up with SWAC for fourth annual auction

December 2, 2010

PLYMOUTH — Friday, WTCA-AM 1050 will be working 9 to 5 to make some local kids’ Christmas a little brighter.
The radio station will host its fourth annual Shop With a Cop radio auction with all the proceeds going to the FOP Lodge #195 yearly program that takes as many kids in need in the county Christmas shopping as possible. Last year the program helped over 300 kids have a Christmas they might not have had otherwise.

Program teaches students computers are more than a hammer

December 1, 2010

PLYMOUTH — “We want you exploring. We want you learning new things and new software.”
Students involved in Lincoln Junior High’s “Genius” program sponsored by Apple Computer heard that urging from Plymouth Schools Media Specialist Ben Waymouth as they went through their first day of training from Kevin Sheppard — a consultant contracted with Apple — on trouble shooting the school’s new Macbook computers. Students were chosen to participate in the program, making them the first line of help when another student is having “technical difficulties” with their computer.

Grolich still serving the community

November 30, 2010

PLYMOUTH — The Plymouth EMS/Fire Department may be losing an important employee, but they are gaining a key volunteer.
A seemingly permanent fixture in the Plymouth firehouse — Assistant Chief John Grolich — is looking at his retirement, but he is proof that public service is in his DNA.
“There is some traveling that my wife and I want to do, but I plan on staying on as a volunteer,” said Grolich. “I think I still have something to offer and I’m going to try to help as much as I can.”
