First baby of 2011 welcomed

PLYMOUTH — It was just a little less than a year ago that Cheryl Smith was named one of Marshall County’s Biggest Losers in a weight loss competition. And now this Culver grandma feels like the county’s biggest winner, as the first baby to arrive in 2011 at Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center in Plymouth is happy, healthy and just wonderful, according to her mother Amy Malek, Smith’s daughter.
Abagail Rose Freese was born Jan. 2 at 9:15 a.m., weighing in at 6 lbs.,1 oz. and measuring 19 inches long.

Commissioners organize for the coming year

PLYMOUTH — It was a day to organize for the coming year for the Marshall County Commissioners as well as welcome new Commissioner Greg Compton.
Compton will take over the seat previously held by Tom Chamberlin, who left to assume his duties as Sheriff of Marshall County. He will also assume several of Chamberlin’s duties on various boards as the Commissioners representative.

Weil finishes in top 5

Garrett Weil of LaPaz, a student at LaVille Elementary School, finished fifth in the feature event of Senior Honda Quarter Midgets at the Ft. Wayne Rumble over the New Year holiday. Weil is the son of Brian and Annette Weil.

PLYMOUTH — While Marshall County government faces challenges in the coming year, local officials feel confident of the county’s abilities to meet them. The economy remains the topic on everybody’s mind and the effect of decreasing tax revenue on county services.

Judge administers oaths of office

PLYMOUTH — Marshall County Circuit Court Judge Curt Palmer gave the oath of office to nearly two dozen newly elected officials late Friday morning.
Those in attendance were elected to office in the November General Election.

Counterfeit money passed in Plymouth

PLYMOUTH — At least two “very high quality” counterfeit $100s were passed at Plymouth businesses last week.
Plymouth Police say the fakes were printed on $5 bills which had been altered through “bleaching” them.

3.8 Earthquake shakes Indiana

GREENTOWN — At 7:55 Thursday morning many Hoosiers — including a few Plymouth residents — felt the earth move.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, an earthquake initially estimated at a magnitude of 4.2 struck north-central Indiana. USGS later revised its estimate to 3.8. The quake struck just before 8 a.m. and was 3 miles deep, according to the USGS.
The epicenter was located about near Greentown, 15 miles east-southeast of Kokomo, 15 miles west-southwest from Marion and 50 miles north of Indianapolis.

Trains celebrated at museum

PLYMOUTH — A special running of the 8-by-40 model train set housed at the Marshall County Museum Wednesday attracted more than 200 visitors, according to Museum Director Linda Rippy.
Within the first 15 minutes the display was opened, there had already been 50 visitors.
Rippy said the display can only be opened when there are enough volunteers.

Day prepares to make second trip to Honduras

PLYMOUTH — Plymouth High School graduate Katie Day will be embarking on her second mission trip to Honduras next summer.
Day was one of 13 Butler University students to be involved in the week long trip her freshman year and now, as she finishes her junior year at Butler, has taken on an internship this semester that includes the planning and recruiting of volunteers for the project scheduled for May 2011.

Glenn proud but not resting on accomplishment

WALKERTON — Things are moving right up for John Glenn High School.
In recent numbers released by the Indiana Department of Education the school earned a passing grade from the federal government in their AYP (Adequate Yearly Progress) ratings, a commendable progress ranking from the state of Indiana for Public Law 221 accountability, and the school’s 2010 graduation rate was up almost a full percentage point from a year ago at 92.6 percent.
