Senter makes it official, he's running for a second term

PLYMOUTH — Current Plymouth Mayor Mark Senter made it official Thursday morning, speaking to the monthly Republican breakfast when he announced that he will seek a second term as Mayor of the city.
Saying he loves his job, Senter went on to thank his wife Leanne; City Attorney Nelson Chipman; Clerk-Treasurer Toni Hutchings; the Plymouth Common Council; department heads and employees of the city for their help and patience during his first term. He also called his recently deceased father, Wayne, his inspiration.

Prank causes concern over social networking

PLYMOUTH — What started as a prank by two former students has pushed the Plymouth School Corporation into high gear to develop a policy on social networking outside of the classroom.
Two former band students sculpted a 7-foot high snow creation in the front yard of Plymouth band director Bryan Ames’ Knox home. The risque statue depicted a part of the male anatomy.

Bridge work continues around Marshall County

PLYMOUTH — Projects at two county bridges continue to proceed as planned.
Jeff Million of DLZ — construction manager for the reconstruction of the 13th Road bridge — reported to the Marshall County Commissioner that the project was finally making headway after some initial difficulties. Pile driving for the piers had been a problem for crews.

Culver pastor Haynes ordained Friday in historic rites

The Rev. Thomas Erskine Haynes, the pastor at St. Elizabeth’s in Culver, was ordained an Episcopal priest in a service at the Academies Memorial Chapel January 14. Attending were 170 people and 20 of those were clergy. Many of those attending were from regional churches, and different faith traditions were represented.

The battle lines have been drawn for what is being hailed as one of the most explosive games in NFL history when, for the first time in 70 years, two North Division rivals square off for their chance to represent the NFC in the battle for the coveted Super Bowl XLV championship title: The Chicago Bears vs the Green Bay Packers; Jay Cutler vs Aaron Rodgers and in Knox, Noelle Patrick vs Joshua Shepherd. Patrick and brother-in-law Shepherd are die-hard fans: Patrick for the Bears and Shepherd for Green Bay.

Culver community comes together for Chloe, Chris

CULVER — Back in November, Culver Community High School teacher and Student Council sponsor Tina Stacy wasn’t sure the Council, even with its best efforts, could reach its goal towards Disney World trips for Culver’s two Make-A-Wish children, Chloe Hough and Chris Webb, Jr., with the holidays approaching and the recession in full swing.

Culver projects set to move forward

PLYMOUTH — It may be possible that work at Lake Maxinkuckee in Culver will begin before the spring thaw.
Marshall County and the Town of Culver agreed to undertake the replacement of the outlet pipe on the lake hoping that replacement would take place during the fall when the lake levels are low. Permits for the work could not be secured and it was thought that the work would have to wait for the 2011 fall season.

Mayor to officially announce re-election

PLYMOUTH — Plymouth Mayor Mark Senter has made it official — he plans to seek re-election.
The mayor made the announcement in a special release Tuesday night that he plans to officially announce his bid for re-election Thursday morning at 7 a.m. when he is scheduled to address the Marshall County Republican Party at their monthly breakfast meeting at Christos Family Restaurant on North Michigan Street in Plymouth.
Senter is in the final year of his first term as Mayor of Plymouth.

United Way has reason to celebrate

PLYMOUTH — An ambitious goal has led to a celebration for the United Way of Marshall County.
This year’s campaign chose to increase their goal from the previous year in spite of economic indications.
“It was an ambitious goal and we’re currently at 95 percent,” said Director of the Marshall County United Way Jennifer Maddox. “We very optimistic that we’re going to reach our goal. We’ve seen huge generosity during this campaign – an increase in current donors and many new donors.”
The bottom line of the campaign is a positive outlook for the whole county.

Bremen Elementary-Middle School receives Lowe’s grant

BREMEN — Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation has awarded a $5,000 Toolbox for Education grant to Bremen Elementary-Middle School to help fund a new playground fence.
Bremen Elementary-Middle School is one of more than 450 schools or parent organizations to be awarded a Lowe’s Toolbox for Education grant for parent-initiated school improvement projects benefitting K-12 public education across the United States during the 2009-2010 school year.
