Donors' gifts enrich lives at Culver Millers

When beloved, life-long Culver businessman and community servant Bill Snyder died last year, his family knew they wanted to do something to thank the staff and administration at Miller's Merry manor nursing home in Culver not only for all they did for Snyder, but for all they do in general. Recently that appreciation manifested itself tangibly in a large, brand-new, flat-screen television for use in Millers' dining room, something which will benefit all residents as well as staff.

Pinkerton to be honored by Hall of Fame

PLYMOUTH – A man who did much for student athletes all over Indiana as an administrator has been honored by his home county for his skills on the basketball court.
Most Marshall County resident's know Larry Pinkerton for his 19 years as Principal at Plymouth High School. In his time there Pinkerton served in various leadership positions for the IHSAA and helped further the opportunities for student athletes at PHS and everywhere in the state.

Officials will lift ban on Thursday morning

PLYMOUTH – The Marshall County Commissioners and Plymouth Mayor Mark Senter have decided to lift the Level 1 Snow Emergency Declaration in effect for Marshall County beginning Thursday morning.
Meeting Wednesday afternoon the Commissioners and Senter made the decision to lift the Level 1 declaration beginning at 6 a.m. Thursday, however they did decide to keep in place a Level 2 declaration in effect for the time being. The Level 2 Declaration issued on Feb. 1 is set to expire at 5 a.m on Friday unless officials decide at a later time to extend it further.

First church in Plymouth celebrates 175 years

PLYMOUTH — Although area residents pass by the Plymouth First United Methodist Church on Michigan Street in Plymouth day after day, they may not be aware of the rich history that goes with the building and congregations past and present.
The church will observe its 175th anniversary this year.  After serving as a mission station with a circuit-riding pastor, William Farns-worth for five years, the church was formally organized in 1836 as the Methodist Episcopal Church. 

Musicians return home for weekend of shows

NASHVILLE — Some old friends will be coming to the area for a musical reunion of sorts next weekend as the band Winchester Fletcher will play a Friday night show, Feb. 11 at the Bear’s Den in Argos and then hit the stage at the Dandelion in Plymouth the next night, Saturday, Feb. 12.
The band features two familiar names to the area in Justin Hall and Bill Rice, who have been making a name for themselves with the band in Nashville. Hall decided it was time to come home for a visit.

Culver Clem's Groundhog Day declaration

CULVER -- Due to the sad demise of Culver Chuck, whose career was calamitously concluded last year, Punxsutawney Phil, plenipotentiary of prognostication for predicting winter's end, has pronounced that Culver Clem will serve on a probationary period for our area.
Culver Clem has candidly cautioned that his career curve doesn't coincide with Chuck's but will call with caution his conclusions for this year.
Explaining that Daylight Savings Time has drastically dulled and disrupted his disposition, he duly noted that he would retreat to his den for six more weeks.

Delays, closings and postponements

February 1, 2011

• Triton schools are closed today, Tuesday, Feb. 1 due to weather.
• Evening activities Feb. 1 have been postponed for Argos, Bremen, Oregon-Davis, Knox and John Glenn as well as for Ancilla College. The Plymouth Schools canceled evening events and rescheduled its school board meeting on Thursday night.

• The annual Rebuilding Together open house for Wed. Feb. 2 has been rescheduled for Thursday, Feb. 10 at 6 p.m. at the Life Enrichment Ct., 1305 W. Harrison St.

Updates will be provided as received regarding extra-curricular activities this evening.

'A carnival of lids' to help provide Riverside benches

PLYMOUTH — Calvary Lutheran’s pre-school program is hoping to put Riverside Intermediate School on the bench — literally.
Riverside’s ecology program is currently collecting plastic lids — for example those on beverage bottles, spray cans and margarine tubs — for a special recycling project.
According to Jill Montgomery, an ecology sponsor at Riverside, the recycled tops will be sent to a company in Terre Haute to be converted into benches for the school.

Culver chili supper will benefit food pantry

The Culver Community Council of Churches, together with the Culver Lions Club, is sponsoring the annual “Chili Supper” from which all proceeds go to the Culver Food Pantry.
The event will be held Friday, February 5 from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Vandalia Railroad Station in Culver. Freewill donations will be accepted at the door. All are welcome to this community event.
