W. Jefferson Street to close for ceremony

PLYMOUTH — West Jefferson Street between Center and Walnut Streets will be closed from approximately 9:45 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 28. The brief closure will occur during the annual Plymouth Memorial Day Ceremony, which takes place on the south lawn of the Marshall County Courthouse square.

Culver truck accident takes out trees, power lines

Cleanup and restoration crews were on the scene much of the day Thursday following a Wednesday night accident which left three telephone poles -- and a great deal of wiring -- and two trees down.

Area Memorial Day activities planned

• The Argos American Legion post will be hosting Memorial Day services beginning at 10 a.m. Events include a parade, ceremonies at Memorial Park and Maple Grove Cemetery. The public is invited to lunch at the legion post following the ceremonies at Memorial Park.
• Bremen VFW Post #8972 and American Legion #191 will host its annual Memorial Day services Monday, May 28 beginning at 10:30 a.m. when flowers will be cast into the river to remember fallen comrades from the bridge on Center Street. Immediately following will be a traditional ceremony at the Bremen Cemetery.

Starke County escaped inmate still at large

A manhunt is underway in Starke County for an inmate who escaped from the Starke County Jail early Wednesday evening.
Joshua Hunnicutt, 30, of Winamac, went over a fence in the recreation yard at the jail at around 4 p,m, and headed south down the alley.
Hunnicutt is 6 foot, weighs 170 pounds, has light brown hair, brown eyes, a moustache, beard and several tattoos.
At the time of his escape, he was wearing gray sweat cutoffs and no shoes.
The escaped prisoner was being held for an outstanding warrant. He was originally charged with maintaining a common nuisance and possession of meth.

Plymouth Motel demolition begins

PLYMOUTH — Private contractors hired by the owner of the Plymouth Motel located on W. Jefferson Street began demolishing the building Wednesday. They say the entire process will take about 10 working days.
Plymouth Motel is one of the establishments named by Mayor Mark Senter earlier this year in his "Operation Bright Spot" plan to clean up the city. Senter called the abandoned motel "a blight to our west side" in a press release in February, also mentioning that the location is an attraction for vandalism and squatters.

Plymouth man arrested for child neglect, battery

PLYMOUTH — Cecilio A. Calderon, of Plymouth, was arrested Tuesday just before noon under charges of child neglect and battery. Sergeant Mark Owen of the Plymouth Police Department, along with the Division of Family Services, investigated the incident.

Tuesday night meth arrests in Argos

ARGOS — Argos police officer Jeremy Enyart arrested two individuals Tuesday at the Argos BP gas station around 9:15 p.m. Both had outstanding arrest warrants.
Michael J. Meeks had a warrant from Marshall County and Amanda L. Gall had a warrant from Fulton County. After further investigation at the scene, Enyart located several items used to manufacture methamphetamine inside the subject's vehicle. Both Meeks and Gall are charged with manufacturing methamphetamine, dealing and delivering methamphetamine, and possession of precursors.

County announces increased patrols for holiday weekend

MARSHALL CO. — The Marshall County D.U.I. Task Force has announced its intention to step up patrols for the Memorial Day weekend. Officers from multiple agencies throughout Marshall County will be out in full force all weekend looking for impaired drivers. Officers would like to remind the citizens to please drink responsibly and be safe this holiday weekend. Citizens are encouraged to report possible impaired drivers to the Marshall County Police Department at 574-936-3187.

Laurent discusses development issues

PLYMOUTH — Marshall County has a lot of land available to companies, but not many suitable buildings. This is a problem, according to Marshall County Economic Development directer Jennifer Laurent.
“Seventy-five to 80 percent of inquires we get are about existing buildings,” said Laurent to Marshall County commissioners Monday in their regularly scheduled meeting.

Student begins community project for MCNC

PLYMOUTH — Anya Hettich, an eighth grader at Lincoln Jr. High School, recently conducted a community service project at the school that she hopes will continue for the next several years. After attending a sports leadership camp last summer, Hettich was on the hunt to find a volunteer project. She settled on the Marshall County Neighborhood Center as a recipient after speaking with MCNC director Sara Hill about the Center’s need for clothes — especially of the trendy, teen variety.
