PLYMOUTH — The third annual Dancing with the Stars extravaganza was held Saturday night at the Swan Lake Resort, netting more than $68,000 for a local organization.
The event is a major fundraiser for the Marshall County Neighbor-hood Center and the Five-Star program at Lincoln Junior High in Plymouth.
One of the organizers and Neighborhood Center Board President, Chad Barden, opened the program with the announcement that they had pledges of $55,000.
The public could vote for their favorite dance couples at $20 per vote prior to the event.

King and Queen of Plymouth High School’s basketball homecoming were crowned Friday night. The students chose Damon Howe and Jordin Cook as their royalty.

2011 Culver Lake Fest in the works, will 'honor our heroes'

The Culver Lake Fest committee encourages residents to think…summer! Friday, Saturday and Sunday, July 15 through 17, the 28th annual “Culver Lake Fest” will “Honor Our Heroes.”
Mike Overmyer, Lake Fest Committee President, said, “We are very excited about this year’s theme, and we want to pay tribute to the heroes that live and have worked in our community and just say thanks for their service to our country.”

Monopoly Tournament Feb. 11 at PPL

PLYMOUTH — The Plymouth Public Library is hosting a Monopoly Tournament Friday, Feb. 11 for students in grades sixth through twelfth. There is no cost to attend. Prizes will be awarded and pizza, pop and snacks will be served. Register before Thursday, Feb. 10 at 8 p.m. in person at 201 N. Center St. or online at www.plymouth.lib.in.us.
The schedule is as follows:
10:15 to 10:45 — Sign in. (You must sign in by 10:45 a.m. to play.)
10:45 to 11:00 — Table assignments and rules explained
11:00 to 12:30 — Semi-finals
12:30 to 1 — Eat and tabulate scores

Culver library looks at labor costs

An in-depth look at the Culver-Union Township Public Library’s finances took center stage at the library board’s first meeting of 2011 last month.
The meeting began with the introduction of newest board member Joan Bess, recently appointed by Culver’s Town Council.
Board Treasurer Alfred Nyby, from a handout he distributed to board members and projected onto a screen, presented a report focusing on trends in library spending and receipts past, present, and future.

Eleanor Boys Blank, former publisher, president of The Pilot Co., dies at 98

Eleanor Boys Blank led a full life, most of which was devoted to helping others. This she learned from her father and mother.
Eleanor died peacefully in her sleep Sunday, Jan. 30, 2011 in Jarales, New Mexico at the home of Richard and Wendy Cordova, who were her caregivers.
Family life
Eleanor Cornell Boys Blank was born in Plymouth to Samuel Evan and Florence Riddick Boys June 18, 1912.  She was the fourth of five children. She graduated from Plymouth High School and Indiana University, Bloomington. While at IU she was a member of the Delta Gamma Sorority.

Bourbon loses officer, friend

BOURBON — The Bourbon Police Department, Town of Bourbon and the community lost one of its most memorable leaders and friends Friday morning.
Bourbon Assistant Police Chief and town council member Gary Collins, 49, was found unresponsive at his home at approximately 5 a.m. Friday morning. He was rushed to Kosciusko Community Hospital where he was later pronounced dead from natural causes, of an apparent heart attack.
It was reported that after working a 3 to 11 p.m. shift the evening prior, Collins had returned home and went about his normal routine.

United Way says thanks to donors and volunteers

PLYMOUTH — It’s been a celebration 50 years in the making and United Way of Marshall County took the time Thursday evening to say thank you to volunteers and donors in its 50th Anniversary campaign at Christos Banquet Center.
The United Way’s annual recognition dinner took time to highlight all the campaign’s heroes and gave a chance for current Campaign Chair Melissa Owen to pass the torch to next year’s Chair Chad Dreibelbis.

Iwo Jima memorial service Feb. 23 in Indy

INDIANAPOLIS — For most, Feb. 23 is just another day in February, but for some WWII Veterans, it is a reminder os something much more important. It marks the 66th year anniversary of the most historical day of WWII, the seizure of Mount Suribachi on the island of Iwo Jima, Japan. Some Americans remember the historical flag-raising by five Marines and one Navy Corpsman, but few will understand the epic battle for Iwo Jima that cost the United States 4,590 lives and wounded 24,096 Marines and Sailors.
