Parents of special needs student slapped by teacher looking for $700K in lawsuit

LAKEVILLE — The parents of a 12-year-old LaVille Junior/Senior High School student reportedly spanked and slapped by a special education teacher has notified the Union North United School Corporation that they intend to proceed with legal action.
Parents Tracy Martin and Michael Cuthbert have secured legal counsel through the Frazier Law Firm in Indianapolis. The tort put forth shows that the parents are seeking a maximum of $700,000 per incident.

Plan director positions combined

MARSHALL CO. — Ralph Booker, county plan director, is now also plan director for the city of Plymouth. Commissioners voted for this change Monday, after much discussion in previous meetings.
“I’m very much in support of this agreement, I think it’s an opportunity for the city and the county to enhance our teamwork,” said Commissioner Greg Compton.
An agreement between the city and the county has been forged, detailing the terms of Booker’s new joint position.

Bell ringers still needed for Salvation Army

MARSHALL CO. — The local Salvation Army group is still working toward its goal of raising $12,000 in its holiday kettle drive.
Local Salvation Army representative Jim Irwin said he was inspired by the tale of LaPorte County pastor Billy Nickrand, who recently rang a Salvation Army bell at a store for 60 hours straight.
“I said to somebody, I’d just like to get volunteers to ring 60 hours for us, not even 60 hours straight,” said Irwin, who is the Salvation Army service extension representative for Marshall County.

Argos man points gun at step-daughter

ARGOS — An Argos man was jailed after he allegedly pointed an unloaded gun at his step-daughter and threatened to shoot her.
Marshall County Sheriff’s Department officers responded to a home on the 15000 block of Hickory Road in Argos.
Donald F. Kulcsar, 40, Argos, was allegedly upset over children being noisy in the home.
At that point he pointed the gun.
Officers from Bourbon and Argos were also at the scene.
Kulcsar was booked into Marshall County Jail for neglect of a dependent, a class D felony, and pointing a firearm at a person, a class A misdemeanor.

Director of MCEDC resigns

MARSHALL CO. — Marshall County Economic Development Corporation’s Executive Director, Jennifer Laurent, announced her resignation Monday. Laurent joined the staff of MCEDC in February 2010 and was appointed as Executive Director in October 2010 after serving as Interim Director for five months.
She leaves the organization with a successful track record of major business expansion projects, the creation of a professional Business Retention visitation program, and new initiatives aimed to increase Marshall County’s development preparedness and attraction marketing position.

Argos mother, daughter die in Fri. night crash

Leesa Sexton, 46, of Argos, and daughter Katelin Sexton, 10, were dead at the scene of a vehicle accident just after 6 p.m. Friday night, and Katelin's twin sister Sarah was airlifted to Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne, from which she has since been released with a minor injury.

Sexton's 2003 Ford Focus veered off U.S. 31 in Fulton County, where it was traveling south, just before re-entering the roadway and rolling several times. The accident took place south of 375 N., on the west side of the highway.

Rue21 plans February opening in Plymouth

PLYMOUTH — Clothing retailer Rue21 has announced a plan to open in the former Blockbuster store on Pilgrim Lane.
“Plymouth offers a great opportunity to further advance our brand in the Midwest region of the country,” said Rue21 senior real estate manager Brandon Clawson via email.
Clawson continued, “The (Pilgrim Place) center is positioned strongly within the market and houses a number of retailers. This provides us with great exposure. Our position along the highway is great to gain the customers who are traveling in and out of the area.”

Leaving a new mark

PLYMOUTH — One downtown shop owner is hoping to rise above a building’s bad reputation and bring a service to city residents.
Patrick Timm, owner of the recently opened All Good Things Tattoos in downtown Plymouth, said that he wants to offer “a safe place for people to get tattoos in Marshall County.”
All Good Things opened in September. Many citizens might remember another tattoo shop that operated at the same address several years ago, Madhouse Tattoos.

Food bank partners with Armory; Free food this Friday

PLYMOUTH — This Friday any Northern Indiana resident in need of food can get it at the National Guard Armory in Plymouth.
The Food Bank of Northern Indiana is holding their December mobile food pantry from 10 a.m. to noon at the Armory.
"We were looking for indoor locations (for the pantry) and that site is an awesome location for it," said Amanda Peterson of the Food Bank of Northern Indiana. "It's an open space, and it's warm in there. People won't have to wait outside in the cold or in their cars."
